The Wisdom of Karma

Everything we do has its consequences. We are often free to act, but once we have acted we are not free from the consequences of our actions. The consequences are as per the ‘Law of Karma’. The law says that whenever our actions are inappropriate or unjust, we incur a debt. This debt has to be paid up.

However, the paying up happens in time; and usually it takes a long time before the consequences return as debt to be paid up. It is precisely this ‘time lag’ that deceives the people into thinking that they can escape the consequences. Since the karmic accounts are preserved in nature’s archives, nobody escapes anything!

The implications of the law of Karma:

  1. Most of our ‘present life events’ are the results of our past karma. The debts are not literally awarded as punishments. They arise in the form of bad habits and false beliefs. So, we are born with certain predisposition; and we allow these predispositions to make most of our decisions. Hence, most of our decisions arise from a subconscious level. We don’t make them with sufficient awareness. In the same way many things are decided for us; and the events that are happening in our life are more like the consequences that are arriving. They make us feel either lucky or helpless.
  2. However, all our actions do not arise from our predispositions and, in the same way everything is not pre-decided for us. Some events are still open. There is a play of forces; and there are many factors at work. Hence, some of our destiny is in the making; and many possibilities still exist. Hence, the final outcome however will depend on how we act and on how others who are connected with the event act.
  3. Besides this, there are intelligences in inner world that decide many of the events that happen in the outer world. Some events are arriving; some events may or may not happen; and there is always room for an unexpected turn to the events.
  4. So, where exactly do we fit into a scheme of things that are happening? Much depends on the choices we make; and how we follow them up with our actions. Hence, our present actions are most important. To succeed in the world that is open to possibilities, we have to do two things correctly:
    We have to consciously decide to work for the events that are actually trying to happen and not for some imaginary events. (If we go against this trend, we have to work that much harder).
    And we have to take up the work where we have some personal advantage over the other players. (Otherwise we don’t get the work or we cannot hold on to it).

UnderstandingThe importance of choosing correctly:

In every case we always remain responsible for our actions; and our choice for us is limited to this:
Either we act (or do our present karma) intelligently;
or we follow our predispositions (our ignorance, false beliefs and bad habits) mechanically.
Thus the results we get always depend on what we choose.

  1. It is said that the final outcome will depend on how we act and on how others who are connected with the event act. However, I feel that final outcome will exclusively depend on how we act in a given situation irrespective of the actions of people connected with us.

  2. Perhaps what you suggest may relate to the long-term some effect. However, for events that are connected to other people, they are also the players; and hence their actions also has a bearing on the result.
    The message is that you have to include others in your awareness if you want to get the result you want.
