Healing by Changing your Consciousness

The prototype or original model of the human body in consciousness is perfect and healthy. Then, why does susceptibility to disease and constitutional disorders arise in our body?


They arise largely from certain defective patterns that we carry in our mindset. We have inherited some of these patterns from our previous existence, and some of them are the result of our actions in the present existence.

Our consciousness gets associated with the contents of our mind, which are the personal thoughts, disturbing emotions, compulsive tendencies and faulty beliefs. And this association creates faults in the consciousness of our vital force or prana of the body. This faulty or disturbed prana then becomes ineffective in maintaining our body in a healthy condition, and gradually functional and constitutional disorders begin to arise in it.

Thus, the contents of our mind are largely responsible for the diseases in our body. The good news is that the effects are reversible. By making some changes in our belief-system, tendencies and negative emotions we carry in our subconscious, we can restore the consciousness of our vital force. Then it will restore health in our mind and body.

The way

Since our vital force is the true healer, the healing power is within us; and in its natural condition it is sufficient to maintain our health. The vital force malfunctions due to the negative patterns and entities in our mind. We are not sufficiently conscious of these patterns and entities, and so we allow them to disturb our vital force, influence our actions, and maintain our bad habits.

The negative patterns and emotions arise when we consider the happenings in life from a very personal and egoistic point of view. If we replace our point of view with a spiritual consciousness – with a large-hearted and inclusive point of view, the consciousness in the vital force will get restored, and it will be able to perform its natural function of healing our body.

Live the truth of health

Your health is holistic, so you are never sick in a part. The part is only the place where the ailment has shown up. It is always a mistake to focus on repairing a part of the body in isolation of the mental mechanism (thoughts and emotions) that has caused the ailment.

So, the major task in healing through consciousness is to FIND the deep-seated patterns caused by your egoistic considerations and to REPLACE them with the patterns got from a spiritual consciousness. The new patterns will make you large hearted and bring kindness, courage and joy into your life; it will change the consciousness in the vital force and cells of the body. And health will be the natural outcome.

Once you have lost your health, the restoration doesn’t happen automatically. You have to develop a health consciousness and allow it change your habits and lifestyle, and clear the negative emotions from your subconscious. In short, you have to promote your ‘health consciousness’; and let your actions speak louder than your words. Then your health consciousness will make you healthy.

A Practice: Choose what you think

Pause often during the day to hear the self-talk going on inside your mind. These are the personal thoughts and psychological memories repeating themselves. They arise due to your egoistic point of view.

Now change your point of view: Decide to live and work for a cause that is always greater than your selfishness and personal considerations. Then your task is to look upon everything from higher point of view, and to reject the thoughts and self-talk that arises from a selfish and personal point of view. That’s all.

Choose the thoughts you want to think, and reject the negative thoughts that want to do your thinking. Accept one and reject the other; and do it persistently. Gradually this practice will change your consciousness.

Affirmations for good health

Your health mirrors your convictions. Hence, if you are constantly ill, you do not believe wholeheartedly in perfect health. So, take this opportunity to install some healthy beliefs in your mind. Declare these statements to yourself:

a) “Wellness is my natural state.”
b) “I am now filled with the energy of life.”
c) “My body will serve me as long as I need it. Hence, I banish the idea of old-age problems or going to an infirmary.”
d) “I am now healthy, energetic, enthusiastic and peaceful.”

Next, try to ACT AS THOUGH your health is real. Do it even if you are not really healthy.

Some necessary points of view

a) The original nature of the human body does not have sickness. Hence, my sickness is due to personal factors that disturb the natural flow of life-energy (prana) in my body.

b) My world is the result of my consciousness projected on a screen. Hence, I do not have to do workouts to develop a healthy body. I have to only develop a health consciousness to become healthy.

c) If I fear disease or poverty, I have a disease or poverty consciousness. It is sufficient to make me sick or poor. However, if I have faith in God and try to serve the spiritual purpose of my life, I develop a peaceful and loving consciousness. It is sufficient to make me happy.


Understand Your Man-Women Relationships

This outline is prepared by me (Prashant) from my experience in counselling and from my notes on reading the popular book: “Men are from Mars” by Dr. Gray. The general idea is that men and women are the products of different models: Hence, their natures are different; they see things differently; and they act and react very differently. If you take the trouble to understand the differences, you save yourself a lot of misunderstandings and trouble. And, as a consequence you will do much better in all your men-women relationships.

The main differences are:

Men Women
Women talk to vent out their emotions; and men interrupt them by offering solutions. (This is a man’s biggest mistake.) Women make comments to try to change a man; that is to make him change his habits. (This is a women’s biggest mistake.)
Men want occasional big expressions of love (sex). The superficial fondling or romance doesn’t satisfy them sufficiently. Women want frequent little expressions of love — they want a lot of pampering, appreciation and romance.
To feel better, men withdraw into themselves or get busy doing something. (It provides them with a shelter and gives temporary relief.) To feel better, women must discuss it — whether the man likes it or not. (They must do it to vent or relieve their emotions.)
For men, if she is not asking or complaining about something, he is doing okay. (However, she may be frustrated and anxiously waiting for him to respond to some dissatisfaction that she had shown!) For women, if she has to ask for expressions of love and affection she interprets that she is being taken for granted. (Then she will try to get even by playing hard to get or by behaving difficult.)
Men want to be appreciated and trusted. (If you tell them they did a good job or you trust their judgement, it raises you in their eyes.) Women want to be cherished or flattered. (If you don’t praise them, they will show you their need by telling you of other people who do it!)
When a man wants something they cannot have, they withdraw into themselves or show anger. (Women react to this expression, but they do not see the part they have played in making it happen!) When women want something, they nag or do verbal bashing to somehow get their way. (Men resent this very much, and so they don’t give in easily.)

Men are from Mars

Men value power, competency, efficiency, and achievement. Hence, they do things to prove themselves. They will develop their skills to improve their power. They derive self-worth from the ability to earn or achieve results.

Thus, men are more interested in ‘objects’ and ‘things’ rather than people and feelings. They fantasize about speed and power, whereas women fantasize about romance. Thus, men like powerful cars, faster computers, sports, and more powerful technology. They get preoccupied with ‘things’ that help them to express their power to create results and accomplish something.

However, when a man gets focused on his work or on solving problems, the woman thinks that he is neglecting her or that he doesn’t care about her feelings!

Women are from Venus

Women value attention, communication, looks, and relationships. They derive their self-worth from how they are regarded. Hence, they spend a lot of time in supporting, helping, and nurturing activities. Talking and relating is their most satisfying preoccupation.

Women think emotionally and not logically. They are naturally attracted by subjects like psychology, personality development, religious practices and health.

They like to nurture things. So they keep plants, like gardens and love flowers. They also love to do shopping and to be with children.

Women are intuitive. Hence, they find it easier to anticipate the needs and feelings of others. They can offer help or assistance to others without being asked. (Men usually have to be asked for help!) Women also accept help more readily when it is offered. (Men can refuse the help – since they prefer to demonstrate their own ability to do things).

If you understand these different models you will do much better in all your men-women relationships.

The Wisdom of Karma

Everything that we do has consequences. We are often free to act; but once we have acted we are not free from the consequences of our actions. The consequences happen according to the ‘Law of Karma’.

The law says that whenever our actions are inappropriate or unjust, we incur a debt. And this debt has to be paid up. However, the causes and effects pass through many stages in the system. So the causes take a long time to return to us as effects or debt that have to be paid up. It is precisely this ‘time lag’ that deceives us into believing that we can escape the consequences.

Karmic accounts are preserved in nature’s archives, so nobody escapes anything!

The implications of the law of Karma:

  1. Most of our ‘present life events’ are the results of our past karma. The debts are not literally awarded as punishments. More often they arise in the form of bad habits and false beliefs. We are born with certain predisposition and we allow them to make most of our decisions. Hence, we don’t make them our decisions consciously or with sufficient awareness. Thus, many things are decided for us; and the events that are happening in our life are more like the consequences that are arriving. We feel that we are either lucky or helpless.
  2. However, all our actions do not arise from our predispositions and, in the same way everything is not pre-decided for us. Some events are still open to influences. At the inner level there is a play of forces; and there are many factors at work. Hence, the destiny is in the making; many possibilities exist; and what happens will depend on what we do and on the actions of others who are connected with the event.
  3. Besides this, there are intelligences in inner world that decide some events in the outer world. Hence, some events are arriving; some expected events may not happen; and something unexpected may arise.
  4. So, where exactly do we fit into these happenings? To succeed in the world that is open to possibilities, we must do two things correctly:
    We have to work for the events that are actually trying to happen and not for some imaginary events. (If we go against the trend we have to work harder, and yet we may not succeed).
    And we have to take up the work in which we have some personal advantage over the other players. (Otherwise we may not get the work or we cannot hold on to it).

The importance of choosing correctly:

UnderstandingIn every case, however, we remain responsible for our actions.
Our choice is limited to this: Either we act (or do our present karma) intelligently; or we follow our predispositions (our ignorance, false beliefs and tendencies) mechanically.
Thus, the results we get will depend on how we choose to act.

Leaky Gut – The Modern Epidemic

AN OUTLINE: Leaky Gut happens when the walls of our intestine become like a leaky sieve. It allows partly digested proteins, bacterial toxins and large semi-digested food particles to enter the blood stream. This is the primary source of many of the ailments and debilitating conditions in our society.
Millions of people are affected by this disorder, but most of them are not even aware of the fact that their troubles originate in the gut. The number of persons affected by Leaky Gut has reached alarming proportions due to the common and indiscriminate use of Antibiotics and NSAID drugs.

What is a leaky gut?

The gut or the small intestine is full of folds and structures that have a surface area of about 200 meters – about the size of a tennis court. It is like a sieve or permeable membrane that allows nutrients to pass through and keeps out the undigested foods, harmful bacteria and parasites. And to do this job, it is assisted by millions of microorganisms (bacteria) that outnumber the gut cells by 10 to 1. These microorganisms are a mix of good guys (mutualises), bad guys (pathogens) and neutral bystanders (commensally). In a normal gut the ration of good guys to bad guys is usually 85%.

Every time the food is passed down from the stomach the gut has to discern as to what it must accept and what it must reject. Larger proteins are broken down in the intestines into amino acids and short-chain peptides; and the larger carbohydrates and fats are broken down into simpler sugar molecules. The smaller and broken-down (digested) food products are then allowed to pass through and enter the blood stream. The larger (undigested) products are kept out of the blood stream until they are broken down and digestible.


What happens when the gut lining becomes inflamed? There are microvilli on the gut surface which produce the necessary enzymes and secretions that are essential for healthy digestion. They get damaged or altered. Hence, some food remains undigested. Further, the inflammation weakens the structure that provides adhesion between the cells. As a result the holes in the intestine wall become larger. Then larger undigested food particles along with some bacteria are able to pass into the blood stream. The defence mechanism of the body can confuse some of these larger particles with invading particles like gems and parasites. And that can generate an autoimmune response which shows up as a food allergy.

The liver has to break down these undigested particles so that they can be eliminated from the blood stream. As a result the liver gets overworked. Then it does an incomplete job or begins to malfunction. Some toxins remain and have to be excreted by alternate processes through the skin and mucus membranes. The higher level of toxins in the blood then becomes the foundation of illnesses. The person is never really well!

What are the common signs of the leaky gut?

  • Feeling tired or sluggish
  • Frequent indigestion with heartburn, bloating and gas (foul smelling)
  • Stools: Sticky semi-liquid or hard, but not well formed
  • Food allergies (to sugar, milk, gluten, etc.)
  • Clogged sinuses, asthma and wheezing
  • Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and acne
  • Muscular cramps or rheumatic joint pains
  • Brain fag and fluctuating moods


What foods aggravate the leaky gut?

Foods don’t cause Leaky Gut, but once this condition has developed certain foods will aggravate it.

The usual culprits are sugar; dairy milk; milk products and products treated with pesticides, herbicides and food preservatives.

In addition to the above some people develop a high sensitivity to GMO foods; gluten (wheat protein); egg white; chocolates; and nuts and oils that have become rancid. The present approach is to eliminate these allergic foods from the diet. That’s fine. But since you are never going to return to normalcy, this elimination has to be done for life! That’s not so fine.

What happens to the gut when we take antibiotics?

Then the good guys (healthy bacteria) get mobbed and the opportunistic bad guys (destructive bacteria), which are able to survive the on slaughter make their move. Once these bad guys get a stronghold in a region of the gut, they change the environment. The probiotics (the good bacteria that help the digestion and produce vitamins) get displaced; holes or small perforations arise in the intestinal lining; and they change the pH balance in the gut making it acidic. That can lead to fungus (yeast) overgrowths like candida and parasites. Given as period of rest and proper food, the body will restore the normal condition. However, when there are repeated attacks by the frequent use of antibiotics and other NSAID drugs, the leaky gut condition becomes chronic. In addition to Antibiotics the powerful drugs that are used in modern times to treat typhoid, malaria, dengue, chikungunya, asthma, and tuberculosis are big culprits. How to restore the leaky gut?

If you have the usually signs of leaky gut, like tendency to gas or flatulence, ill-formed or sticky stools or an unpleasant feeling in the belly and frequent digestive upsets, you have a leaky gut.

Once this condition is set, taking yogurt or buttermilk or even eating foods like bottle gourd, kafirs, etc. is not going to settle the issue. You will have to take some of the powerful probiotic products that are in the market. Further, if you use probiotics, don’t take them along with digestive enzymes. The enzymes can break up the bacteria.

Some recommendations:

  • After taking any antibiotic treatment, consider using PROBIOTICS for another week. It will alter the bacterial balance in the gut. After a gut illnesses, like the irritable bowels syndrome (IBS), use probiotics for a few months to replenish the gut with healthy bacteria. Replenishment with probiotics has only a temporary effect).
  • All probiotics are not equally effective. Different ‘strains’ (types of bacteria) have different effects. Hence, it is best to choose a probiotics formulation that has at least four kinds of different strains. Such combinations are available in the Indian market as brands like Enbioz and Vibact.
  • Like probiotics there are also PREBIOTICS. They serve as food for the gut wall cells and assist the growth of healthy gut bacteria. Undigested (complex) carbohydrates in the form of fibers usually serve this function. There are also some natural prebiotics like: garlic, ginger, leek, bananas, watermelon and honey. You can use them liberally.
  • L-GLUTAMINE: This is an amino acid supplement that is commonly used by muscle builders. However, it is also a very useful nutrient for the gut wall cells and the associated immune cells. Hence, it has been strongly recommended for promoting the growth of intestinal cells. It reduces the gut permeability (leaks). You can take a one gram capsule for a few months daily, between meals, to have the desired effect.

How Safe are Antibiotics?

Antibiotics are the backbone of modern medicine. Almost any infection can be cleared by them. However, today these powerful drugs are being used to clear up every mild bacterial infection that arises; and people try it even where there is a viral infection (where the antibiotic has no role). Whereas the antibiotics are life saving drugs particularly in the latter stage of infection, their indiscriminate use to treat every mild illness has reduced their future effectiveness.

The newer bacteria that are arising are more drug resistant, and so it is expected that the antibiotic will not do its job in future, when it will be most required. Many doctors are already comparing the seriousness of antibiotic resistance to cancer! In addition, the use of antibiotics is like a double edged sword; it comes along with many dangerous long-term side-effects like allergies, organ damage; loss of ‘good bacteria’; and of course, the growth of drug resistant bacteria that do not serve the usual useful purposes in the body.

The Crisis of Antibiotic Resistance

At present there is an emerging crisis of antibiotic resistance to microbial pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Streptococcus pneumonia, Mycobacterium tuberculosis; and great increases in multiple drug–resistant gram-negative bacilli. Infections caused by such antibiotic-resistant microbes are having an impact on clinicians that practice in every field of medicine. The effect is so large and wide that it is becoming a threat to all the institutes of public health.

Since the discovery of the first antibiotics in the late 1930s and early 1940s, these ‘wonder drugs’ have been used extensively in both hospital and outpatient care. They have been incredibly effective in controlling and even destroying pathogenic bacteria. This has led to their widespread acceptance and use. It gave rise to the rule: “In case of infection, the obvious treatment is to give an antibiotic.”

The infections that in earlier times would have caused great suffering or death were now being easily controlled and cured by antibiotics. That the antibiotics are very effective is undisputed. However, what is disputed is how safe is their indiscriminate or frequent use. Here we show the other side of antibiotic effect. These drugs are capable of doing both great good, and everyone knows that. What they don’t know is the harm that arises from using them often.

In the books on biology the earth is described as a bug’s world. Billions of different species of bacteria, fungi, virus, protozoa, and others inhabit every area on earth’s surface, from Polar Regions to active volcanoes, from the land to air and oceans. They were here prior to the entry of the animal and human species, and will doubtless be here long after we’ve gone. Every one of us is carrying thousands of bugs of many kinds. Golden staph, Streptococcus, Meningococcus, Pneumoniae, Tuberculosis, E. coli, and others are present in us most of the time.

These bugs play very important roles in nature. They are nature’s agents that act as in our ecosphere – constantly recycling decaying matter, scavenging, and generally keeping the planet sufficiently health to maintain life. They know how to cultivate organically; they know what to do to maintain their own future; and they’ve been doing it since the dawn of biological life.

These microscopic bugs perform the same sort of duties within the human body and around it; and without them, it must be admitted, we would die. Our bowels house a lot of these microscopic bacteria, collectively called ‘flora.’ In a healthy colon, there are billions of them and we can identify more than 400 different species. The best known are Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum.

In the healthy gut, these bugs are all friendly. They are meant to be there. Each one of them has its place within our ecosystem: some live in the mucous lining, some on the right side, some on the left, others in the middle, some at one end. They communicate with us when there are imbalances, and they play important roles in digestion and nutrition. For example, they help in the synthesis of valuable nutrients, such as vitamin B5 and K; in production of valuable acids that actually nourish the enthral mucosa; etc.

These floras also play a vital role in the functioning of our immune system. They produce natural antibiotics that keep out unwanted microorganisms. In a healthy intestinal environment, our gut flora can deal effectively with intruders like parasites and worms. They are involved in detoxification and perform a host of other beneficial activities. They are known to even produce anticancer substances.

The practice of treating infection using antibiotics (and vaccines) is based on the idea that these micro-organisms or bugs cause disease. The commonly held GERM THEORY, promoted by followers of Louis Pasteur, a nineteenth-century microbiologist, holds that these bugs that get into our system actually cause disease in our bodies. It gave rise to the rule that if we can stop these bugs getting in or kill them as soon as they enter we can essentially win the war against diseases.


Pierre Bechamp, Pasteur’s contemporary, held that the bugs are not themselves the cause of disease, but their invasion is more the effect of a ‘disease state’. That is, they act in the same way within us as they do outside us, recycling and scavenging. Bechamp’s idea was that if the human (animal) organism is maintained in reasonable health, then imbalances of bugs will not occur, and correspondingly disease will not arise. A healthy body, therefore, is able to maintain good health despite the bugs; and we may be well because due to the presence of these bugs!

Naturopathy favours the Bechampian model. It holds that natural intelligence (which is superior to the rational human intelligence) has created the body with mechanisms that maintain healthy balances (homeostasis) and, provided that we live in harmony with our natural environment, optimal health will be the natural result. This is exactly what we see in the animal, plant, and, insect world; where there is balance and interdependence between the species. And keeping this in mind it can be argued that to the extent the environment has been polluted by human beings, imbalances have occurred, which have in turn brought about increased stress, trauma, and disease to the whole of human life.

Chemical Warfare against Our Friends

The toxomolecular approach is developed on the Pasteurian model. It opposes the presupposition that there is an inherent balance within and among living beings, and suggests the natural intelligence got it wrong! Hence, they consider these bugs as enemies that ought to be destroyed by all means possible. This thinking gave rise to the discovery of chemical and antibiotic intervention. The dogma became: “Kill those bugs to get back to health!”

However, the fact is that even when people come into contact with a contagious germ, most of them do not become infected; and even among those who do become infected, most do not get sick. Even the most dreaded polio virus produces no symptoms whatsoever in over 90 percent of people who contact it! The notorious meningococcal bacterium, which is involved in the death of some people every year, is actually present in about 25 percent of the human population. It is therefore a fact that most “killer bugs” are present in healthy human population without producing any symptoms of disease. This is something that just couldn’t happen if the Pasteur germ theory was correct!

The Role of Bacteria in Disease

Before exploring the fascinating and complex role of antibiotics as both saviours and killers, let us first understand the ROLE of bacteria in disease:

When a person who is susceptible is exposed to pathogenic bacteria, (which has the capacity to cause a disease) what happens? These bacteria multiply rapidly and cause local or systemic damage. The body’s reaction to these intruders is to initiate a series of complicated defence measures. The result of interaction between the pathogenic bacteria and the body’s defences is termed as INFECTION. This outcome is determined by several factors like the vitality of the individual’s immune response and the strength and numbers of the pathogenic bacteria. Human immune vitality is affected by various factors like hereditary, environment, stress, activity level, diet, nutrition, mental attitude, etc.

It is important to recognize that the association of bacteria with human tissue does not necessarily constitute an infection. Hence, it is not a pressing indication for eradication of the organisms! Even the so-called ‘pathogenic bacteria’ are commonly found to ‘colonize’ the body’s skin and mucous membranes without causing the least harm to the host. If you take throat swabs of healthy, symptom-free individuals, for example, it will not be surprising to find the presence of Beta Hemolytic, Streptococcus organisms, Meningococcus, and other pathogenic bacteria. However, according to the current medical procedure this finding indicates an immediate need for antibiotic therapy to prevent serious consequences!

From the point of view of holistic treatment, the central problem of modern medicine (the drug therapy and surgical intervention) in disease is that they generally deal with the END of the disease spectrum and concentrate only on its localised manifestation. But most of the disease processes arise in the early stages as mere functional disorders. The modern medical science chooses to ignore the causes and uses drugs to merely suppress the symptoms of the acute diseases. In this way they allow the disease to develop and they assume that their task is to only suppress the symptoms! Ultimately the structures or organs start to break down and then they will demonstrate the wonders of surgery.

Antibiotic Over-prescription: The Modern Mistake

Antibiotics are the most commonly prescribed drugs in the history of medicine, but today nearly 50% of those are prescribed to people in ailments where they are not really needed. Why does that happen? Many GPs say they lack the time to deal with persistent patients; and they fear complaints if they did not prescribe antibiotics to show immediate results.


DoYouNeedAntibioticsIt must be admitted that antibiotics are prescribed as a routine, without properly evaluating whether they are necessary or safe to use. In most instances of active infection (where there is actual invasion by bacteria and the destruction of tissue) antibiotics are prescribed on purely clinical grounds, without taking recourse to bacteriological evidence. On most occasions the infections are trivial and self-limiting, and sometimes there are viral infections, where antibiotics have no direct action. This is a misuse, but it would matter little if these antibiotics are free of toxicity! Unfortunately these antibiotics are known to cause severe allergic reactions and complications and the original disease may seem to be minor in comparison.

Antibiotic Toxicity

Antibiotics are not tonics or free of toxicity! Antibiotics are extremely useful as life-saving drugs, but they also have very toxic side-effects. Hence they should be reserved for use only as the last resort; for cases where no other therapy exists and the life of the organ or patient is in danger. This is not how antibiotics are commonly used today. So we illustrate some of reactions and complications that arise from the indiscriminate use of antibiotics from the medical journals.

By far the most obvious and severe reaction to antibiotic use is immediate anaphylactic shock. Anaphylaxis and anaphylactic reactions are abrupt and often life-threatening episodes. It gives rise to upper airway obstruction and circulatory collapse, which can cause of death. And the number of agents that are known to trigger the anaphylactic shock is continuously expanding. The acute allergic reactions that commonly follows penicillin and iodinated contrast materials are well known. They compared to the effect of severe bee and wasp stings!

Allergy and hypersensitivity to penicillin and streptomycin is publicly known, whereas the effect of over-the-counter topical ointments containing neomycin and other antibiotics is equally common, but not so well known. Further, the frequent use of such antibiotics makes the person hypersensitive to other antibiotics. It increases their risk of having allergic reactions in future. The skin is particularly sensitive to antibiotics and often gives allergic reactions. Some of these reactions like the ampicillin rash subside within a few days, whereas some others are very troublesome and last a long time.

Contact dermatitis often follows the use of antibiotic eye-drops and eye ointments, especially with neomycin. In patients with chronic inflammatory ear disease, allergic patch testing has demonstrated that 35 percent were due to antibiotic medication! Systemic contact dermatitis, termed as “baboon syndrome,” can occur, causing diffuse skin redness and inflammation covering the entire buttocks, upper inner thighs, and armpits. Various allergy tests performed on patients suffering from chronic recurrent urticaria showed positive reactions to antibiotics. Photo-toxicity is a well-recognized occurrence with tetracycline. It causes skin fragility, denudation, and blisters when exposed to the sun; and the skin can remain fragile for seven months thereafter! A far more serious skin reaction to antibiotics is toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell’s Syndrome), in which 25 to 100 percent of the skin is covered with fluid-filled lesions. Death occurs in some cases.

Finally, there is penicillin-induced generalized post-inflammatory elastolysis. The following report describes this severe and fatal reaction: “A 13 year old boy received penicillin for influenza and otitis. Within days of taking this medication, he developed recurrent edema of the face and a generalized urticarial eruption that waxed and waned. The salient and unusual features of this person’s disease were: (a) a senile appearance of his face with flaccid folds and sagging of the skin. (b) Dermatitis herpetiformis–like cutaneous lesions and (c) Gluten-sensitive enteropathy. Elastolysis increased in time and led to further deterioration of the patients’ physical appearance. Six years later, the patient developed internal manifestations and died.”

The ears are particularly sensitive to damage by medications. Today, the number of potentially ototoxic (toxic to the ear) substances is high, but the most important class is the aminoglycoside antibiotics, such as neomycin. The prevalence and severity of hearing impairment caused by these drugs is surprisingly high. Not only the spiral organ, but the vestibulocochlear nerve and the higher auditory pathways are also affected by these antibiotics. In some cases, hearing cannot be corrected even with a hearing aid. In some cases the aminoglycoside antibiotics in eardrops cause hearing loss. Regardless of the route of administration, these antibiotics pose a special hazard to the inner ear.

Two most common side effects of antibiotic use are diarrhoea and colitis. Arthritis can develop from cases of antibiotic-induced colitis. Ulceration and mucosal damage can be caused by antibiotics elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract. Often ulcers are found to occur in the esophagus after suing oral antibiotics. Antibiotics can totally alter the normal bacterial flora in the intestines, leading to mal-absorption of nutrients. The antibiotics also damage the flora’s ability to produce vitamins, thereby causing deficiencies.

Pseudo-membraneous colitis, a possibly lethal form of infective colitis, is reported to occurs in case of many antibiotics. Further, once this condition develops, it is impossible to reverse it and the only remedy is to surgically remove a portion of the colon. This often happens in adults who have frequently used ampicillin, penicillin, clindamycin, erythromycin, and septrin.


The occurrence of suprainfection is attributed to suppression of the body’s natural flora. This flora normally provides natural protection against the unlimited multiplication of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms like yeasts. The administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics, especially by mouth, can result in suprainfection with candida and other yeast, filamentous fungi, coliform organisms, proteus or pseudomonas species. These organisms can then colonize and damage many sites throughout the body. In some cases it even causes death.

The most recognized and researched form of suprainfection involves (the previously discussed) pseudo-membraneous colitis. This condition is now known to be due to suprainfection by Clostridium difficile, which produces an enterotoxin that can cause death. The antibiotic treatment creates a susceptibility to this infection by presumably altering the normal ‘barrier function’ of the colonic microflora.

Another form of suprainfection that has gained medical recognition is the overgrowth, locally and systemically, of Candida albicans after using antibiotics is. Some forms of this candida overgrowth are relatively benign, such as the common yeast infection many women have come to almost expect, following a course of antibiotics. These yeast infections are fairly easy to treat in most cases, but some women develop chronic or recurrent cases that are life threatening. The most publicized of these infections involves the gastrointestinal tract. Candida has been known to colonize the mouth, esophagus, small intestine, large intestine, and anal region. Cases have been reported in which tracheal obstruction and death was caused by a candida fungus ball after the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics.

When candida colonizes and invades the mucous membranes of the small intestines, increases the permeability of the wall. As a result relatively large undigested protein molecules are allowed to pass directly into the bloodstream. There they can act as antigenic material, and initiate an immune allergy response (Leaky Gut Syndrome). This can lead to allergic manifestations involving any target tissue or organ; and it may be responsible for a wide range of local and systemic pathology. In many cases this leakage of ‘large food-source protein’ molecules is the cause of food allergies!

Organ Damage

There is evidence to suggest that under certain conditions the candida mutates, losing adhesion to the cell walls to enter into the bloodstream. This creates great difficulty in therapy since nystatin, the most frequently used antifungal medication, is not absorbed into the blood; it remains only in the gastrointestinal tract. The disseminated candidasis has been known to cause death due to multi-organ involvement. In a study of fatal cases of systemic candidiasis, in most of the patients more than one organ was affected. The major organs involved (starting in order of highest frequency) are the lungs, spleen, kidneys, liver, heart, and brain.

The kidneys are highly susceptible to damage by drugs; and antibiotics are the most commonly implicated drugs in clinical reports of ‘drug-induced nephro-toxicity’. Aminoglycoside antibiotics continue to be a mainstay of therapy in the clinical management of gram negative infections, but a major factor in the clinical use of aminoglycosides (ampicillin and others) is their nephro-toxicity! In most hospital-acquired infections, the occurrence of aminoglycoside-induced renal failure is commonplace. Presently at least 10 percent of all cases of acute renal failure can be attributed to these antibiotics. Other classes of antibiotics, including penicillin and sulphonamides, also cause kidney damage.

The clinical manifestations attributed to these antibiotics include natural or spontaneous renal failure, renal colic, selective tubular defects, acute nephritic syndrome, hematuria, and obstructive nephropathy. In the case of severe renal failure, dialysis becomes necessary. The precise manner in which antibiotics damage kidney tissue is not completely understood, but virtually all antibiotics are excreted in part by the kidneys. It is suggested that antibiotics either alter the permeability of the plasma membrane or interfere with cellular energy derived from mitochondria. Enzyme systems active in the kidney are also capable of activating the drugs which are concentrated as ‘reactive toxins’ by the kidneys. Drug-induced immunologic damage may occur due to drug accumulation. Some antibiotics have been known to cause kidney damage by inducing the life-threatening autoimmune proteins of lupus (SLE).

The liver, which detoxifies and removes drugs from the circulation via bile, can also be damaged by antibiotics. Chemically induced liver injury from antibiotic use has caused cholestatic jaundice, hepatitis, and fatty infiltration of the liver.

Acute pancreatitis can also be caused by antibiotic use. Oxytetracydine and tetracycline can depress amylase and lipase activity. The impairment of digestive enzyme synthesis may cause a mal-absorption syndrome, which can take months to normalise.

The immune system has been damaged in several ways by various classes of antibiotics. Lupus, mentioned earlier, is only one of the immune malfunctions caused by antibiotics. Penicillin and tetracycline-induced hemolytic anemia, caused by the rapid destruction of red blood cells, happens many times. Similarly, another immune response causes damage to or destruction of blood platelets. It gives rise to abnormal bleeding, haemorrhages, and an increased risk of thromboembolism. There is also the report of neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia, as well as reduced phagocytosis by the cells of the reticuloendothelial system. It appears that penicillin and many other antibiotics reduce the effectiveness of the immune system and thus predispose the patient to further infection.

Commonly used antibiotics can also cause various central nervous system toxicities like seizure disorders, encephalopathy, bulging fontanelles, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. The abnormalities have been associated with the use of penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, colistin, aminoglycosides, metronidazole, isoniazid, rifampin, ethionamide, cycloserine, and dapsone. Cranial nerve toxicities, such as myopia, optic neuritis, deafness, vertigo, and tinnitus, have been associated with the use of erythromycin, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, colistin, aminoglycosides, vancomycin, isoniazid, and ethambutol.

Permanent peripheral nerve symptoms, such as parasthesias, motor weakness, and sensory impairment, have been associated with the use of penicillins, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol, colistin, metronidazole, isoniazid, ethionamide, and dapsone. Various antibiotics have also been shown to cause multifocal myodonus, encephalopathy, seizures, and coma. These conditions are, in some cases, resistant to all treatments and sometimes result in death.

Another fatal complication of antibiotic use is acute bone marrow failure and aplastic anemia. This fatal condition has been caused by tetracycline, chloramphenicol, ampicillin, oxecillin, thiamphenicol and penicillin.

Antibiotics also affect the heart and circulatory system. Cardiac toxicities due to antibiotics may cause drug-induced myocarditis and myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Injection of antibiotics also carry a serious danger. Intravenous infusions of some antibiotics have been shown to cause phlebitis after two days on therapy. The unintentional injection of an antibiotic into an artery, which may occur on occasion during a routine intramuscular injection, can have disastrous effects. Vascular-occlusion gangrene has been reported several times!

Oral antibiotics have also caused similar reactions, as the following case report illustrates: a nodular exanthema of the skin was observed in an eight-year-old girl. She had been treated with penicillin a few days earlier for a gastrointestinal infection. Continuation of penicillin treatment led to occlusion of larger arteries and gangrene of the forefoot. Generalized vasculitis with multisystem involvement also occurs, with possibly fatal results.

The Need for a Change

Although we have only discussed some of the many toxic effects of antibiotics, it clearly shows the need to be conservative in using them. And it is interesting to note that many health complaints that routinely receive antibiotic therapy can be easily treated with simple, safe, and effective nontoxic approaches.

For example, consider a case of acne. This condition is very satisfactorily treated by holistic therapies along with some dietary and lifestyle changes. Yet most allopathic (modern) physicians will treat it with oral antibiotics! This might be acceptable if they were particularly effective and had no side effects, but the antibiotic class most frequently prescribed, are the tetracyclines and minocycline. We have discussed the usual side-effects of tetracyclines, the minocycline have been found to cause black pigmentation of the thyroid, sclera, bones, teeth, skin, and nails. The tetracyclines can cause permanent staining of the teeth. Recently, topical antibiotics have come into vogue for the treatment of acne. These antibiotic lotions are certainly less toxic and avoid the possibility of adverse affects of systemic therapy, but they still do not address the underlying cause of the condition. They only treat or suppress its most obvious symptom. Bacteria do not cause acne (which every dermatologist must be made to admit), so any therapy aimed at killing bacteria will not remove the cause and hence it cannot eradicate the condition. All it can do is give some temporary relief.

Acute otitis media is another condition which is treated with antibiotic therapy. The great bulk of these conditions are serous or secretary otitis – which is a nonbacterial condition, in which antibiotics have no effect. Often the reverse happens – the antibiotics cause the inflammation to linger! In every case, the early use of antibiotic therapy can interfere with the development of local immunity. So when the symptoms are merely suppressed, they will RECUR.

Bacterial otitis media does occur, but is the result of eustachian tube dysfunction. It is a catarrhal condition that arises due to improper diet or allergy. Bacteria can then proliferate within the stagnant serous fluid in the middle ear and cause typical acute symptoms of earache and fever. It is always easier to prevent this condition or reverse it in early stages. Even at the end-stage of the disorder with infection, antibiotic will not be required if the patient uses the holistic therapy.

For many years a large number of doctors have routinely prescribed antibiotics for upper respiratory infections. Antibiotic therapy has been shown to be of no value in the treatment of these infections, either in shortening the course of the acute illness or in preventing the development of secondary bacterial infections. Yet the doctors routinely prescribe tetracycline, erythromycin, and ampicillin. The indiscriminate use of antibiotic therapy cannot be a substitute for proper diagnostic evaluation of whether the patient has bacterial or the more likely a viral infection.

Antibiotics in the Food Chain

Antibiotic exposure is a regular feature in the current farming and animal husbandry practices. They use antibiotics to treat infections, to accelerate the growth of young livestock, etc. Here also it gives rise to antibiotic resistanan pathogenic organisms. After a short period of time the animals that receive antibiotics show a great deal of antibiotic-resistant strains in the intestinal flora, including pathogenic strains. The resistant bacteria enter the environment through the animals’ excretions, where they are now causing biological problems for water creatures and they can also affect humans. The resistant bacteria is often passed on through foods of animal origin like meat, milk, and eggs.


Bacterial Mutations and Antibiotic Resistance

A major internal and external ecological issue has arisen due to the development of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. It happens to the extent that antibiotics are used. Resistance may develop by selection of resistant strains, which may develop by random mutation. Further, organisms resistant to one antibiotic may become resistant to another, called cross-resistance. Bacteria often have complete cross-resistance to structurally related antibiotics. Resistance may be acquired by the transfer of genetic material from one organism to another. It also appears to occur outside the body, probably in sewage and contaminated surface water.

There is a case where a mutated enterococcal bacterium (VRE) has emerged. It is resistant to all pharmaceutical antibiotics! Normally, enterococci reside quite happily inside the gut and female genital tract, where they cause no problems. In diseased people (often in hospitals), enterococci can become opportunistic and cause heart valve or urinary tract infections. This bug actually thrives around antibiotics. The real potential for damage, however, is in the ability of bugs to so easily transmit genetic information to other bugs. Vancomycin resistance, for instance, may spread from enterococci to other bacteria, such as golden staph. And that would be disastrous.

At present, the bugs have survived in this war (a war they never wanted) extremely well; they are mutating in ways we never thought were possible, and at rates which have alarmed the scientists. The overuse of antibiotics, both medically and in meat and dairy production, has led to bugs mutating to the point where they can even threaten the existence of healthy people. This can lead to a situation that humanity has never seen before. Until now, if people died from infections, it was generally because of poor health in the patient, poor choice of treatment, or both. But now the situation is changing. If it continues, and if we keep trying to destroy the bugs by chemical warfare rather than letting our bodies keep them in balance, we may see many fatalities before the bug war is over. This possibility of a superbug arising has even been discussed by the World Health Organization.

An Estimate

The adverse effects of antibiotics call for a re-evaluation of their present widespread and often indiscriminate use for humans and animals. Unless the allopathic medicine decides to look at the infectious diseases differently they will never try to attend to the causes or develop alternatives. They may even set the stage for a large-scale epidemic of antibiotic-resistant diseases.

It is important to understand that the only truly effective antibiotic is to develop a healthy and strong immune system; and until we begin to direct our therapeutic efforts toward strengthening the body and not to killing the germ, infectious disease will continue to remain a threat to humanity.

What You Can Do to Protect Your Health

  • Avoid using antibiotic treatment unless you have a life-threatening situation. It will be better to overcome an infection by holistic means (see our other articles). It will develop your immunity and make you stronger and less dependent on treatment with drugs.
  • Avoid consuming meats and dairy products (since they contain antibiotics) unless you know they are got from a genuine organic source.
  • If you have taken antibiotics, then flush your gut with probiotics immediately thereafter. The bacteria from Curd or Yogurt are not enough. Then further, every six months take a course of probiotics as a precaution. Buy only refrigerated probiotics and that too from a reliable source.

Marrying the Wrong Person?

JewishStarWhat are the chances that you will marry the wrong person? It’s certainly a high possibility; and most of us in modern society are seriously afraid of it.

But, why does the ‘wrong person’ happen to us? Is there a flaw in how we choose our partner? Have we gone wrong somewhere? Many of us recall the lasting relationship our grandparents enjoyed. So we ask: “what was the traditional glue that kept them together?” Can we also have such a traditional-marriage relationship in the modern times? Can I make my existing marriage a success? Why does the ‘wrong person’ happen to us?

Marrying the wrong person has become a high possibility, and today most of us have become afraid of it. It has made us very cautious, and we feel the need to take time to know our partner. Unfortunately, taking more time to decide doesn’t really help us because we come to know BOTH the good and the bad side. Hence, we are unable to decide and remain confused.

Some of us try to improve our odds of success by setting off the undesirable points against the desirable points. In this way we try to see if the marriage is still a bargain. However, the uncertainty remains; and most of us still land up marrying the wrong kind of person!

The wrong person happens to us because we do our thinking from one side; from our side. We overrate the issue of choosing correctly and underrate the need for keeping trust in the relationship. Our expectations are usually unrealistic and we can easily fool ourselves in believing that we are getting a good deal. In any case we still cannot anticipate the issues that can arise only after our relationship has been fixed.

Is there a flaw in how we choose our partner?

When we are youthful, we pick our partner on the basis of sexual attraction or ‘chemistry’. We get infatuated with physical beauty or attractiveness. So, we underrate all the other qualities in the partner. However, our criterion changes as we mature (and women mature much faster). Women usually give more value to the status attached to having the partner (financial security, reputation, etc.). But men still remain obsessed with looks – as though a pretty face is the trophy. Later on, as wisdom arises, both sides begin to value the marriage more for the company it offers. Then the important factors are having similar goals, common interests or a partner who complements our abilities.

However, the common mistake is that we select a person with our ‘youthful criteria’; and this criterion does not serve us when we have matured – because our preferences have changed. The modern society has the remedy and it is called DIVORCE. But this remedy has totally changed how we regard marriage; and it still leaves us without someone to share our life with! We still want happiness through marriage; we want a family life (with children); and we want relationships that last a lifetime (with relatives).

Where exactly have we gone wrong?

Many of us have come to understand that marriage is basically a traditional concept, and that it does not fit in properly into the fabric of modern society. Marriage has served the human society since thousands of years, even before the organised religions took shape. However, the modern trend, as expressed through social media and movies, tries to sell us a different story. They see traditional values with the modern eyes; and they wish to tell you that marriages in the past also didn’t work out! However, if you are not easily deceived by the falsehood they have created, you can see that they speak like the FOX who says: “The grapes are sour”; whereas the truth is that the grapes are just outside their reach.

Most of us can still recall the lasting relationship that was enjoyed by our grandparents or in the traditional society. So, we ask: “What was the traditional glue that kept these people together?” The glue or the binding force in traditional society was the COMMITMENT that the partners made BEFORE A HIGHER AUTHORITY. This commitment transformed the ‘issue of choice and pleasure’ into the ‘issue of acceptance and duty’. It does not overcome the differences in opinion that normally arise between the partners of the opposite sex. However, it changes how you regard your partner and the marriage.

SummitIn traditional society the partner is regarded as ‘God given’. You accept the other person and the role you are in just as you accept your children. Differences arise of course, but it is always for you as individuals in the relationship to keep the unity and make the necessary adjustments. It is admitted that traditional society asks the women to do most of the adjusting and hold the family together. However, that was the role given to them, and so they did not grudge it. They did it as a part of their duty to their own welfare and their commitment before a higher authority.

The modern times have discarded the traditional values saying that now it’s the ‘women’s era’. The women must assert their rights and claim their entitlements. The traditional role of women as ‘home maker’ is a ‘lose-win’ situation for the women. Why should a women feel committed to the husband’s or the family’s welfare. Her only concern is herself. However, they assert this concern without balancing their share of entitlements!

This new outlook has made marriage imbalanced. The traditional Dharma is lost. And the relationship naturally deteriorates into a ‘lose-lose’ situation.

Without Dharma and commitment there is no foundation for bringing two egos together for a lasting relationship. We have to look at what the marriage makes possible for all parties and not simply claim our share for ourselves. A stable marriage is good for both partners, for the children, and for the larger family. It also provides the support structure that each partner needs to endure difficult times and to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

The modern mind will say: “Why not ask men to do the adjusting?” And the traditional mind asks: “Are the roles decided according to the nature of man and woman? Is traditional Dharma set by a higher intelligence or is it something that is to be decided by social convention or experiment?”

Modern society is basically atheistic; it believes that everything is to be decided by the human intelligence; and that men have only pampered themselves in traditional societies. So, there was imbalance in the past in favor of men and now it must change in favor of women. But what is basically imbalanced will remain unstable.

Can I have a traditional marriage relationship in modern times?

The traditional idea of Dharma is to maintain a balance between right and wrong; between duties and rewards; between rights and obligations in society. So Dharma is not fixed rules of social conduct. It is a living truth that changes its expression in society with the changing times.

You can know your Dharma by asking your heart, the God within.

When you act in the atmosphere of Dharma you don’t have to put a claim on your rights and rewards; you let them arise on their own. You don’t do things for the sake of pleasure; instead you take pleasure from what is given to you.

However, when you do your duties in the atmosphere of the ego, you keep an eye on your rights and rewards. Then you easily become demanding or get frustrated. And when that happens your luck moves away.

So, when you go looking for the right husband or wife, just remember that you also have to be the right person! Don’t focus on finding the right person; focus on being the right person. Do the first things first and what is for you or provided for you, will come to you naturally.

How to make your marriage a blessing?

If you are in a marriage and you are experiencing a lot of difficulties, you can still change everything. You do it by changing how you regard everything.

Consider your partner as ‘GOD GIVEN’ (even if you got your partner through personal choice);
believe in KARMA, that natural justice exists (and so everyone, including you, gets what they deserve and not what they want);
ACCEPT what you get graciously (when there is acceptance, the issue of getting the ‘wrong person’ doesn’t exist – you simply get what has been made for you); and
TRUST the higher authority that oversees your life (ask it to guide your actions so that you do the right things).
In short, consider your marriage as a BLESSING; accept your DUTY as ‘God given’ and perform it well; and TRUST that everyone gets what is due to them in the natural course.

Allopathic medicine is the mainstream system. It is a leader for treatment in emergencies, in infectious diseases, and for ailments that require surgical intervention. However, most of the common troubles that we face are only FUNCTIONAL DISORDERS, such as:

How to Succeed with People

Learning interpersonal skills

Most of our life is an interdependent reality. We have to work with people, live with people and deal with people. Further, we often share responsibility with others, but we don’t have the authority to direct them. We can work well by ourselves, but when we have to get things done through others we experience many difficulties. Hence, the common saying is: “The people problems are the worst!

Human relationships can be either enjoyed or suffered; they can be either encouraging or frustrating. What we get will always depend on how we conduct ourselves! To succeed with people, first we have to understand the psychology of the ‘other person’. Next, we have to see things from the other person’s point of view and understand what motivates their behaviour. Only thereafter we can know what we need to do to get the right response from the other person.

The skill in dealing with people can be learnt and it will be very valuable for everyone in society — for a businessman, a professional, a colleague, a housewife, and a member of any group in society. And this skill will become increasingly important as we climb up to the higher positions in our social system. The business tycoon, J. D. Rockefeller, once said: “I will pay more for that ability (to succeed with people) than for any other ability under the sun.”

Why do we neglect learning interpersonal skills?

In college we are educated to think rationally. We are trained to direct our efforts towards personal efficiency, towards learning scientific techniques, and towards earning money. But in the process our emotional nature remains uneducated. Hence, we do not easily understand the ‘psychological side’ of human nature. For this reason in modern society people’s inner life gets easily messed up. They just don’t know how to be happy by themselves or by relating with people.

Why is this subject not taught in our colleges?

There are some things that we really appreciate only after things have gone wrong in our life; after we have made a mess in our relationships. People feel the need to invest in the emotional side of life only after they have stumbled a few times. The common saying is: “Wisdom arises only after our hair has already turned a little grey with experience!”

Further, there is not much in the form of newer ideas to learn here. The bigger task is to implement these ideas in your life. To succeed in human relationships it does not matter how much you know; what matters is how well you implement what you know. Hence, it is not a matter of learning the technique. Professional psychologists will not necessarily do better than you!

What is the KEY to success here?

It is to become genuinely concerned about other people’s feelings; to change how you regard them; and to change your assumptions about other people. Without this basic change you can only make some small cosmetic changes in your relationships.

It is admitted that it is always difficult to change yourself. The normal human tendency is to want the other person to do all the changing! A course participant once said: “I’ll give you a 1000 dollars if you teach this course to my mother-in-law.” I could only smile, but in my mind I said: “You are paying me too much for that, but it’s a very small price for changing your relationship with your mother in law; and it may also not work out because she will want you to do all the changing.” To succeed with others the only price you have to pay is to change yourself. However, when you succeed here, I assure you that you’ll never be alone in your life or be lonely wherever you go!

Spiritual Yoga

Yoga has been introduced in the western world as a technique for reducing our stress and improving our health. However, the traditional purpose of Yoga is to develop our spiritual life. Here we explore this ‘spiritual side’ of Yoga. First we explain the nature of the inner life and the spiritual quest; and then we show how spiritual yoga can help you in accomplishing the spiritual goal.

The Inner Life

We are born on earth with a mind that directs our attention outward towards things. Hence, we do not see the inner life and we seek our satisfaction from the outside — through the ‘things’ of the outer world. Thus, we chase comforts, pleasures and possessions in the outer world.

We pursue these things thinking that by having them we shall get the deeper satisfaction that we really want. However, when we achieve something, we do get some superficial satisfaction, which lasts for a short time. However, soon thereafter we again become dissatisfied and start to chase something else. In this way the chase goes on and on. It does not strike us that we are looking for our satisfaction in the wrong places!

Yoga considers our mind and body as instruments through which we function on earth. They are like our possessions – our house or car. Hence, by satisfying the desires in the mind and body, we can only get some superficial and temporary satisfaction. If we want deeper and lasting satisfaction, then we have to also satisfy something that is truly deeper and lasting! That something deeper or lasting is the soul or spirit.

When we satisfy our spiritual being, spiritual qualities begin to arise in our inner life. And as we organise these qualities in our nature, we develop spiritually. Let us tray and understand this development in terms of the two levels of our consciousness.

The two levels of consciousness

Throughout our life on earth two levels of consciousness (the ordinary and the higher level) are reflected in our mind. The ordinary level reflects the desires in our mind and body; and the higher level reflects the impulses got from our soul and the over-soul or God.

When we function at the ORDINARY level, we are attached to our mind and body. Then we experience ourselves as a ‘mental-self’, which is simply a self in the mind. This mental-self causes us to live mainly to satisfy the desires in our mind and body. So, we keep on looking for comforts, pleasures, possessions and recognition in the outer world: We want to own a posh house; we want to eat tasty food; and we measure our success by how well we stack up against others.

In society we experience the ordinary level as our ‘GROUP IDENTITY’. When we serve this group identity, we move beyond the boundaries of our personal selfishness and try to include the feeling of others in our group. In this way we identify with our family members, with our work associates, with the followers of our religion, and with the people of our community. The group identity enlarges our concern, and that causes us to think that we are serving the higher consciousness. That can happen sometimes, but more often the group identity merely replaces our personal selfishness. And sometimes the group identity can make us behave in ways that are more degrading than mere selfishness (as in terrorism).


What happens when we can function at the HIGHER level? It awakens our ‘sense of unity’ and the ‘voice of our conscience’. The experience of UNITY makes us feel that as human beings we are like children of the same father. Thus, we feel kindness towards others; we cannot be cruel or insensitive towards them; and we cannot solve our problems by making them someone else’s problems. Even the idea of competition makes us uncomfortable. So we try to replace it with feelings of cooperation and coexistence.

The voice of our CONSCIENCE is the silent voice from the heart. It enables us to recognise the right and the wrong in all matters concerning life; it causes us to refine the values and motives that guide our thoughts and actions in the world. When we try to follow this voice, a truth-sense develops within us.

The process of spiritual growth

Both the ordinary and the higher levels of our consciousness are always reflected in our mind. However, initially we mainly function at the ordinary level. That is, we serve the mental-self. And the mental-self in turn keeps us preoccupied with physical activity and egoistic pursuits.

Our spiritual being also has its presence inside our mind through the higher level of consciousness. However, we give so little attention to it that in most of us it has become something vague, hesitant or far removed. As a result we do not feel united; our ‘truth sense’ is weak; and we do not perceive any deeper purpose to our life.

The practice of Yoga seeks to REVERSE this situation. And it does that by changing our ‘point of view’! Instead of looking upon everything from the ordinary level, and giving an ordinary meaning to higher things, Yoga makes us look upon everything from the higher level. It changes the ‘level’ of our perception. It changes ‘from where’ we see or ‘what depth’ we see from.

Gradually we begin to see everything as a part of a much LARGER PICTURE: We can situate everything correctly or find the proper place for each thing; we can look deeper into the happenings in our life and in the world; and we can recognise the true motives behind the actions of people and the world movements. The result is that we are not easily deceived by outer appearances.

The method of Spiritual Yoga

The term Yoga is a common noun that means joining or union. In the beginning our mind is joined with the ordinary consciousness. In Spiritual Yoga we change this. We begin to detach it from the ordinary level and attach it to the higher level. And as we do that, spiritual qualities get organised in our mind.


The KEY idea of Spiritual Yoga is that wisdom and the higher values of life arise naturally in our mind when we are responsive to the higher consciousness. Thus, wisdom is not the result of developing our ordinary consciousness, as in modern education! It is the result of disciplining the mind and making it responsive to the higher consciousness. Then, instead of being led by the desires and tendencies of our mind and body, we shall be guided by the wisdom of our spiritual being.

The idea of unity in Yoga is similar to the ‘oneness’ that develops between a horse and its rider. However, the oneness has to be such that the will of the rider prevails! When the rider wants to go somewhere, the horse should also want to take him there. The horse should not protest or assert its independence and wander away.

The technique

We begin the practice spiritual yoga by learning to concentrate. What does that do? It brings together all the scattered forces of our attention under a higher will. It is like bringing the different chieftains under a ‘central leadership’. Gradually all the forces inside the mind are made to acknowledge the presence of the higher will and adjust themselves accordingly. When that happens, we can concentrate on our tasks without distraction; we can change our mental habits; and we can remake our values on the basis of a higher principle.

In Yoga we practice concentration by giving the mind something to hold on to, like a mantra. Then, in our task is to simply try to confine our attention to the mantra. The natural tendency of the mind is to drift onto other thoughts, particularly to thoughts of pending matters and personal concerns. So, our attention will stray onto other thoughts. However, when we find that our attention has strayed, we must continue the practice by simply returning it to our chosen theme, the mantra. The act of persistently returning our attention to the chosen theme makes all the difference: Gradually all the forces inside our mind will accept the leadership of the higher consciousness and adjust themselves to it.

Is Spiritual Yoga theistic or atheistic?

Let us consider these two different points of view. The atheistic view regards God as an imaginary concept or a belief. On the other hand the theistic view uses the ‘God idea’ to perceive the spiritual presence that exists behind all things and happenings. In the theistic view we learn to relate with the spiritual presence and try to make it a reality in our life.

It should be evident that Spiritual Yoga is a theistic pursuit. Here a personal (self-made) God is used to bring about a deliberate shift in consciousness – from the ordinary level to the higher level. When the higher consciousness gets organised in the mind, we become intuitive and begin to live at a higher level. It totally changes how we regard ourselves and the outer world. Then, instead of perceiving ourselves as a personality that has arisen out of a mind and body, we begin to see ourselves as a spiritual being that is temporarily functioning on earth through the instruments of a mind and body. Thus, it opens up the truly mystical dimension of our life.

The Message

Today we are ingrained to believe that our health depends on doctors, medicines, and the health care industry; whereas the truth is that our health really depends on our lifestyle, diet, emotions and constitution. When we understand this simple truth, we can learn to restore and maintain our health by our own efforts and, except in extreme cases, we will not need to consult doctors.

The medical science is focused on relieving symptoms

The Medicine Show (A Consumer Union of U.S. Publication) says: “The public has grown accustomed to thinking that a doctor’s job in curing diseases is to find the cause and remove it. However, the truth is that a greater part of the physician’s efforts goes towards relieving symptoms with very little knowledge of their causes; and today’s most prevalent illnesses, many of which are chronic illnesses, are merely treated symptomatically.”

The approach in modern medicine is to classify a collection of symptoms as a disease syndrome, and then to treat this syndrome with powerful drugs. This method is very useful in treating life-threatening disorders and stubborn infections. However, most of our everyday illnesses are merely FUNCTIONAL DISORDERS such as: Respiratory disorders like the common cold and cough; skin disorders like rashes that itch, dandruff and foul odour; pains like headache, stiff-joints and back pains; and digestive disorders like irritable bowels, constipation and flatulence. And for such ailments the modern medical science has no effective remedy. They only try to manage or relieve the symptoms and provide some temporary relief.

What is so wrong with just relieving symptoms?

When you habitually treat the symptoms of common functional disorders with drugs, you merely modify the symptoms without removing the causes. And when the underlying causes continue, the disease develops further and becomes chronic. It gives rise to annoying symptoms like the headache, stuffy nose, acidity, gas trouble, rheumatic pain, skin rash, respiratory allergy (like asthma, wheezing), blood pressure, etc. Such chronic disorders are less intense in their effects, but they harass more since they last for a long time and recur periodically.

And for such chronic conditions there are ‘no outright cures’ – there are only medications that temporarily manage or relieve the symptoms. Hence, you are never healed; you are merely put on medication, which has to be continued for the rest of your life! Hence, hypertension is not healed; it is treated with BP pills that have to be taken for a lifetime. Asthma is not healed; inhalers become your constant companions Osteoarthritis is not healed; the ultimate remedy is sought in knee replacement. Allergies are not healed; you become increasingly dependent on medication. The list is endless.

However in the early stages a disease is always just a functional disorder. If you choose to suppress the symptoms at this stage, you bypass the healing that should happen at this stage and allow the disease to become internalised. Then it develops further and becomes chronic; and ultimately it becomes degenerative wherein the structures of the organs like the heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, etc. begin to break down. Then you need surgical intervention.

The three big mistakes

  • The symptoms are considered as the disease, whereas the symptoms are only the EFFECTS of a diseased state.
  • The causes of a disease are sought in external agents like germs and bacteria, whereas the true cause is due to TOXAEMIA – a ‘diseased state’ that arises due to the accumulation of toxins in the body at the cellular level.
  • When the treatment focuses on merely relieving symptoms, the CAUSE CONTINUES. Then the ailments become chronic or newer disorders continue to arise. Hence, the patient is never really healed.

Understanding the disease in terms of toxaemia

In natural healing the primary disease factor in the body is called TOXAEMIA. It is experienced as irritation, pain, restlessness, indigestion, or sluggishness. The deeper causes of the toxaemia usually lie inside the person – in their lifestyle, diet, emotions and constitution. Let us perceive how this diseased state arises.

Whenever there is some disturbance or excess in our life, the vital force gets depleted. Then it becomes insufficient. Then our digestion, assimilation and elimination also become weak and our system becomes sluggish. That is, our digestion is incomplete; our assimilation is poor; and all this stuff has to be decomposed so that it can be thrown out. The ultimate effect is that there is a gradual build up of toxins or waste products in the body at the cellular level. And once the ‘toxin level’ is higher than the body can tolerate, the body’s resistance to the external agents of disease like the allergens, germs, bacteria, etc is lost. Then the body becomes SUSCEPTIBLE to illness.

How to detoxify the body

  • Reduce the ‘toxin level’ in the body. Once the toxin level is lowered, the vital force will be able to perform the function of healing naturally.
  • Correct your lifestyle, eating habits, etc. so that toxins are not allowed to accumulate in the body.

Reduce the existing toxaemia

Nature cure uses many methods such as fasting, water cure, baths, packs, elimination diets, etc. Here we consider the method of ELIMINATION DIET, which is to eat only fruits for breakfast.

This diet has two considerations:
a) You give the body a long period of rest from digestion on a daily basis. Then the body will use the extra vitality that becomes available to eliminate the toxins.
b) Next, you eat fruits that have good cleansing properties for breakfast. They assist in eliminating the toxins.

The correct way of eating fruits:
Fruits detoxify your body, but the detoxifying effect is best when you eat them on an empty stomach and not when you take them after meals. When you mix other food with fruits, the mixture stays for a long time in the stomach and ferments (turns to acid). Then you experience acidity or gas.

Avoid generating toxins

TooMuchFoodRule-1: Eat less, and take only easy-to-digest food. When you eat less food, you do not waste your energy on processing the excess food. When you can digest all the food you eat, you become more energetic and produce fewer toxins.

Rule-2: When food remains undigested in the body, it ferments. And that increases the toxin level in the body. Hence, value food items according to your ability to digest and assimilate them, and not according to their nutrient content! Simply avoid eating food that is hard to digest or has toxic additives.

In specific:

  • Avoid fried food, soybean preparations, sweets, chocolates, refined flour preparations and food containing preservatives.
  • Avoid consuming food that is highly processed, highly sweetened or salted; or foods that carry health claims (don’t encourage deceivers). Food is processed to increase its shelf life (not your life) and the processing makes it more indigestible in your body.
  • Further, some foods are processed to make them tasty (deep-fried or addicting ingredients are added). It increases their consumption. However, that is better for the seller’s business and not for your body.
  • Avoid consuming ‘concentrated’ food-stuff. Don’t be deceived by the label of extra nutrient value. They will be harder to digest. Instead, eat the food with lower nutritional value that comes with a lot of roughage and fibre. The fibre and roughage make it easier for the body to digest and assimilate the food, and the waste products that are generated will also be easier to eliminate.
  • Avoid consuming diet supplements and micronutrients unless you have a specific deficiency. Otherwise by taking them you serve the interests of the pharmaceutical companies, and not your interest. If you have a specific deficiency, take the supplement (preferably from a natural source) only until the deficiency is overcome. Do not continue to consume it thereafter. Otherwise it creates DEPENDENCIES and generates imbalance in the body.

Some good eating habits

  • The main purpose of eating is to feed the body. Hence, do not combine other purposes, like parties and thrill with the act of eating.
  • While eating, try to become conscious of what you eat, and how much you eat. When you maintain this discipline, the natural instinct of the body will awaken and allow you to sense the quality of the food you eat.
  • Eat only two main meals in the day. Establish your meal time and adhere to it. Avoid eating between meals. If you eat at odd times, you will not be hungry at the meal time! Further, if you don’t get the hunger sensation at meal time, don’t eat.
  • Drinking water: You need about 9 glasses of water a day. Try to drink ‘fresh stream’ or mountain water; and avoid drinking tap water or recycled water. Further, drinking water is not the same thing as drinking beverages.
  • The time factor: The morning time is naturally suited to the function of elimination. Hence, at this time avoid eating food, and drink of lot of water. The digestion is strongest around mid-day. Hence, lunch should be your main meal. Take rest after eating a big meal. The digestive fire becomes weak on overcast days and in the rainy season. Hence, eat less on such days and in the corresponding season.

If natural healing is so simple, why isn’t everyone doing it?

Natural healing not been popularised because the modern medical business is not interested in finding a solution from which there is no money to be made.

Further, some people understand the message of natural healing, but still they do not pursue it because they lack the will power that is necessary to change their lifestyle, diet and emotional habits. So they come for advice, but they are actually looking for a quick fix. These people don’t want to accept the responsibility for their health. So, they prefer to take the pill and settle for some temporary relief.
