A growth strategy for business and profession

EKS is a ‘holistic approach’ to managing your affairs in an ‘open system’. It shows you how to conduct yourself so that you can have extraordinary growth and remain always wanted. The principles of EKS are simple to understand. However, to be able to apply them consistently and effectively, you may have to also make some changes in your business strategy.

EKS was originally devised by Wolfgang Mewes of Frankfurt. It is a concerted (simultaneous) application of the energy laws, cybernetic control and a benevolent strategy. In this introduction we explain these terms individually and then we put them together to show you the power of the concerted effort.

The Energy Laws

The energy laws are commonly known to define the growth processes in nature. But it was left to Mewes to show how these energy laws also determine the behaviour in human systems. EKS says: “When you act according to energy laws, the greater system or the environment encourages you and you have growth. When you act against these laws, you meet with diminishing results and the environment tries to shut you down.” The general idea is that you should not to try harder to win against the energy laws; instead you should aim to better utilise the energy laws.

Applications of energy laws in social systems:

Concentration: Find what you really like to do and can do better than others; develop your speciality on that and become attractive.

Gap Behaviour: Develop into the gap between others; offer what is missing and don’t try to do what everybody is doing.

Develop into the Depth: Find the best solution for your target group and don’t try to merely improve the existing methods.

Bottleneck Orientation: The energy in systems gets obstructed at bottlenecks. Hence, direct all your effort to overcome the bottleneck in your target system. Here you make maximum impact with minimum energy.

Become Settled: Aim to do a constant task for a clearly defined target group that you are suited to serve.


It is a method of controlling (steering) a system through feedback. Your body, your family, your business, your company, your trade, your market, your philosophy, etc. are all systems. They a network of forces that are interconnected, continuously interacting, self-adjusting and work as a whole. Hence, once you have set your goal, you can use feedback to make the system ‘goal oriented’.

Some examples of control through feedback: You can regulate the temperature in air conditioning with a thermostat; you can regulate the price in the market by adjusting the factors of supply and demand; and you can regulate the water-level in a flush tank by using a floating ball mechanism. In all such cases the output or result is used to regulate the next action or input.

What is the real advantage of cybernetic control?

If you analyse all the different parts of a system and try to control them individually, the task becomes very cumbersome, complex and laborious. Instead, you accept the complexity of the system and try with the ‘whole system properties’, you can control the system through feedback. The control will be much simpler and more effective. The nature of systems is such that they are always self-adjusting and self-organizing. Hence, their behaviour can be effectively controlled through cybernetics.

In EKS you begin by turning your information systems (sensors) outward, to sense the needs of the target group. Then you use feedback to make your actions more goal-oriented. When you set it up like that, you won’t waste your energy in blindly pursuing irrelevant knowledge or opportunities; you will know what is really important and how to make the relevant knowledge and information gravitate towards you automatically. Then you will be able to recognise your true options and you know what you have to do to get them to work for you.


The need:

Your strategy (or business philosophy) decides how you command your forces and means to achieve your objectives. It decides what you choose; what you trade-off in a give and take exchange; and how you try to find your fit (suitability) into the larger system or environment. All these things are decided by your strategy.

In today’s world, everything is changing rapidly and there is competition everywhere. There is too much information demanding your urgent attention, and you cannot have the time to deal with it. Under these conditions if you don’t have a strategy that differentiates you from the other players, you become a common person with no special appeal to anyone. Then you become a mediocre person who can be easily replaced; your life becomes a continuous struggle; and you land up in situations where everyone is trying to arrive at the same place.

However, if you have a clear strategy, you have to don’t wander around aimlessly or try to find something from here and there; and you won’t keep on reacting to other people’s moves. Your strategy will show you the right things to do in every situation; and when you are in difficulty, it will show you how to turn things around to generate your competitive advantage.

Some people think their strategy is to simply provide the highest-quality product at the lowest cost, and keep on improving their product endlessly. That is ‘operational effectiveness’ and not strategy. It is good for every business, but it is not something you choose!

The EKS strategy:

EKS uses an extroverted strategy. It says that your value in a system is not determined by how you evaluate your product or yourself. It is determined by the value other people attach to you. Thus, the importance you get is not personal. It arises indirectly from the value or benefit you bring to your ‘target group’ – the receivers of your work.

Your individual efficiency or ability may be great. But to be utilised by the larger system, you must be relevant to the larger system, and contribute to its needs. And to do that you have to give up your individual selfishness and instead identify with the goals and aims of the greater system. Hence, EKS says: “Your strategy should be to bring the greatest value to your target group. Satisfy their needs better; and correspondingly your own attractiveness, turnover, profit and security will improve automatically.”

STRATEGY (for individuals)

  1. a) First, do your ‘own thing’. Build your core strengths on what you really like to do; and do it better than others.
  2. b) Next, match your distinctive capabilities with the opportunities that exist or are arising in your environment.
  3. c) Then, integrate your special knowledge with the actual problem situation of a concrete target group so that you don’t become irrelevant.

Using Dr. Schuessler’s biochemic cell salt remedies to overcome common health disorders

The_Biochemic_Prescr_Cover_for_KindleIn the 18th century there was great interest in the biochemistry of cells. In 1873, Dr. Schuessler analysed the ash content of human cells and identified twelve inorganic tissue salts that are essential for the healthy functioning of our body.

He believed that there is a biochemical basis to cellular health and vitality of the body organs, and they are maintained by a balance of these twelve tissue salts. Thus, these inorganic tissue-salts were considered to play a vital role in healthy functioning of the human body: in digesting food; in assimilating nutrients; and in eliminating the biological waste products.

Whenever there is a deficiency of any of these inorganic salts in the body tissues, certain typical symptoms are found to arise. So, when you observe such symptoms in a person, all you have to do is supply the deficient salt in a potentised form (6X). It will stimulate the vital force of the body, which will do the healing.

Dr. Schuessler administered the tissue-salts in a potentised or vibrated form. He commonly used the 6X potency to restore the vital force at the vibration level. When the vital force is restored, it becomes active and does the healing.

In this therapy you do not suppress the symptoms of a disease to claim a quick cure. Instead you focus on restoring the healing power of the vital force and allow it to do the healing through a natural process. Further, the healing is considered to happen through a biochemical process. Hence, these ‘inorganic salt supplements’ are called ‘Biochemic Remedies’ or simply the Biochemic tissue-salts. They can be purchased in the potentialised form (6X) from most Homeopathic Pharmacies and online stores.

These inorganic salts are present in the blood, lymph, bone, nerves, etc. Whenever there is a deficiency of one or more of these tissue-salts in the body organs certain symptoms arise in the body. The biochemic remedy in all such cases is to stimulate the vital force of the body with a potentised form of the deficient tissue salt. Then the body will on its own begin to overcome its deficiency and heal itself.

It is interesting to note that Dr. Schuessler was originally a homoeopath. Hence, this therapy has been given a supportive role in homeopathic treatment. However, the basis for selecting the remedy in this Biochemic system is different from the Homoeopathic system. Here the selection is based on a perceived ‘deficiency’ of the tissue salts. It is not based on the homoeopathic ‘law of cure’ (let likes be treated by likes). The main thing in common between homeopathy and biochemistry is that the remedies are administered in a ‘potentised’ form. That is, they are given as pills of sugar of milk that contain a vibration of the inorganic salt. There is no active chemical, and hence it is not a drug therapy.

This biochemic system is much simpler than its parent, homoeopathy. Here you choose the remedy from just twelve tissue salts! On the other hand, in homoeopathy you have to collect a very wide range of symptoms, repertories them, and then find the matching remedy from an equally large number of remedies. Hence, the task can be overwhelming.

The twelve tissue-salts

Here we give the ‘signature’ of the twelve Biochemic Tissue-Salts. For a more detailed discussion, please refer to the author’s book (The Biochemic Prescriber, available from the Amazon and Kindle online stores). The Biochemic tissue salts are available from most of the Homeopathic Pharmacies.

Cal Fluor

This salt governs the elasticity of the muscular fibres and connective tissues. Its deficiency makes the skin, muscles, ligaments and/or veins lose their elasticity. Hence, the ruling symptom is loss of flexibility, elasticity or chronic dilation.

Thus, it will heal a prolapsed uterus or bladder (with dragging down sensations); haemorrhoids (that itch and bleed); joints that easily dislocate; glands that have hardened and calcified since exudation was difficult; skin that is cracked or chapped; and veins that have become varicose.

It is also useful for overcoming lose teeth and receding gums; and for treating lumps that develop on bones (after a bad bruise to a bone or a fracture) or around joints (after a bad sprain). It also strengthens the bones that bend, as in bow legs or hunched back; or where spurs have developed, as in osteoarthritis.

Cal Phos

This salt is associated with defective nutrition in bones, muscle, and glands and with teething troubles in children.

It is an essential mineral in gastric juices that are necessary for protein assimilation. Hence, it is given for building the blood cells (anaemia), muscles (strength) and bones (as in teething). It is commonly used as a tonic to quicken recovery after an illness or after there have been exhausting albuminous discharges and menopause.

The deficiency of this salt causes foul taste in the mouth along with bloating, flatulence or heartburn. Often the person cannot bear tight clothing. And there are freckles and pimples on the face.

This salt is also used to treat aching pains in bones, cartilages, joints and muscles; and for healing brittle bones or bones after a fracture; and for treating the effects of wasting diseases like TB, sexual excess and emotional disorders.

Cal Sulf

The main function of this salt is to remove impurities (like pus) from the skin and blood. These impurities show their effect on the mucous membranes and the skin: The boils or abscesses discharge, but not heal.

The different organs of the body cannot perform their tasks well when the blood becomes toxic with pus. Hence, this salt is often used as an inter-current remedy while treating chronic coughs, colds, earaches, eczemas, and eye infections. The discharges are characteristically thick and yellow. It serves as an expectorant in chest congestions.

Ferrum Phos

This salt is a constituent of the red blood corpuscles, which act as the carrier of oxygen to the different organs of the body. Whenever there is infection or inflammation in any part of the body (heat, redness and pain), the temperature rises to fight the bacteria or virus, and unless it rises beyond 102 degrees, it should not be suppressed. This salt is most useful at this stage. It is the ‘rescue remedy’ in all acute illnesses.

Thus, Ferrum phos is used in the first stage of fevers and at the onset of an acute respiratory illnesses (like coughs or colds), before any swellings or discharges have developed. The person will be listless and there is redness of parts, with no other clear symptoms.

The lack of this salt causes the muscle fibres to relax. Hence, there is dilation with the accumulation of blood, and sometimes with haemorrhage. It is the first remedy for earaches, and nosebleeds after an injury.

Kali Mur

This cell salt unites with albumen (protein) to form fibrin, which is found in all tissues of the body except bone. When Kali mur is deficient, the fibrin becomes non-functional and causes a thick, whitish discharge from the mucus membranes. The tongue is typically coated white.

Kali mur is most useful in treating the second stage of inflammations and congestions. It helps in all catarrhal conditions such as coughs, stuffy head colds, chest colds or stuffed sinuses, etc. where there is a swelling or white discharge. There may be white ulcers or thrush in the mouth.

This salt will relieve rheumatic swellings and detoxify the lymph and glandular systems of the body. It is very useful in earaches with congestion in the Eustachian tubes (so that hearing is affected).

The skin is dry with white scales. The eczema is dry. This salt is the biochemic ‘first aid’ for burns and blisters. It stops the wound from bleeding and heals it faster.

Here the digestion is very sluggish. Often there is indigestion or diarrhoea from consuming rich or fatty food.

Kali Phos

It is the mineral constituent of the grey matter of nerve fibres, like the brain. It is used as a nerve tonic for people in the convalescent stage of any acute illness (especially after flu) where there is nervous exhaustion. Give it freely to people who are under the pressure of mental work or study (exams) or to the executives that are burning out. The person shows the need for warmth and rest.

This salt relieves the nervousness that arises from emotional stress. Hence, it is ideally suited to people who “fly of the handle for no good reason”; where there is hysteria, depression or tantrums.

This salt is also useful in septic conditions where there is a decay of the nerve fibres. The fever is high (as in intestinal fever); the breath and body odour are foul (as in tooth decay); and the discharges are also foul smelling and bloody (as in gangrene). The tongue has a mustard colour coating.

This salt is mostly used as a brain tonic to relieve nervousness, brain fag, insomnia (sleeplessness), and the condition of shattered nerves. It will also relieve dull neuralgic pains.

Kali Sulf

This salt cleanses the skin, which is the largest organ of the body. Whereas Ferrum phos carries oxygen to the organs, Kali sulf transfers the oxygen onto the cells where it is used. Hence, it is said to promote ‘cellular breathing’. In this way it cleanses the epidermis (top layer of skin). It overcomes the dull and sickly appearance of the skin, psoriasis, and scaling as in dandruff. In skin eruptions the discharges are sticky and yellow, as in chicken pox.

The discharges from the mucus membranes are typically yellow. The tongue is coated yellow; the discharges are thick and sticky and cause wheezing in the chest which often gets worse between 3 to 5 AM. It is useful in the third stage of coughs, colds, earaches, etc. where expectoration has formed, but it is sticky and difficult to bring out.

It is used in inflammatory fevers to open up the pores of the skin and cause perspiration. It relieves ailments that are due to suppressed eruptions. The eruption returns in a milder form, which can be easily overcome.

This remedy is indicated when a change of weather from cold to warm. It brings on the symptoms of cough, cold, or rheumatic pains that typically move (shift) around in the body.

Mag Phos

This salt has a striking effect on white-nerve fibres and muscles. We call it the ‘biochemic aspirin’ since it relieves pains anywhere – in earache, headache, toothache (including teething in babies), abdominal colic, muscular spasms and even sciatica — as long as the pains are better by heat and pressure.

The characteristic of the pain is neuralgic (i.e. sharp, spasmodic or cutting pains that come and go). It is not a dull pain! The action of this tissue salt is the opposite of Ferrum Phos, where there is relaxation muscles contract. Here there is convulsion, cramp and restlessness.

This salt will relieve painful menses, muscular twitching, hiccough and spasmodic coughs. Women who need this remedy may be found doubled up in bed with a hot water bottle pressed into their abdomen.

Natrum Mur

This salt affects the ‘water balance’ in mucous membranes, skin and body organs. There is dryness in the mouth along with strong thirst; lips are dry with a crack in the lower lip; the cough is dry and hacking; the bowels are constipated, etc. On the other hand the discharges are watery: the nose is running; the eyes are watering; and there is much sneezing.

It will relieve edema (excessive fluid build up in specific areas of the body) like puffy ankles; the creaking in joints (due to dryness); painful mouth ulcers; and water-filled blisters (herpetic eruptions).

The headache of Nat mur is usually throbbing or hammering. It arises due to fluid imbalance in the brain. The patient has poor endurance to the heat of the sun, and so they often get a headache from exposure to sun.

The food takes a long time to digest in the stomach, so there is indigestion and full sensation. Sometimes there is a salty taste in the mouth; sometimes there is a craving for salt; and many troubles are aggravated by living near the seashore.

Nat Phos

This salt maintains the alkaline balance in the body. It emulsifies fatty acids and keeps the uric acid soluble in the blood. It is useful in troubles of the stomach and intestines when there is ‘acidity’ – a burning sensation with indigestion and gas. The digestive tract is very sensitive and intolerant to ‘acid forming’ foods like milk, fats, sweets, alcohol and vinegar. The person usually has a large appetite, but feels worse after eating.

Often there is acid belching after eating; itching around the anus due to worms (which thrive in acidic conditions); obstinate constipation or constipation alternating with sour smelling and burning diarrhoea with sudden urging.

All the discharges here are characteristically sour smelling and creamy yellow. The skin is sore and itching with eczema or yellow scabs. Often there is eczema in the lower foot with intolerable itching.

This salt keeps urea soluble in the blood; otherwise uric acid salts can precipitate around joints and ligaments of the body causing STIFFNESS in skeletal muscles and swellings in joints. Hence, this salt is known to relieve (inflammatory) rheumatic conditions from acid diathesis. It is also a kidney tonic.

Nat Sulf

This salt is associated with the liver and it cleanses the intercellular fluids of the body.

Nat sulf is involved in carbohydrate metabolism in the body. Hence, it is useful in treating digestive upsets or nausea after eating starchy foods or fruits; and in morning diarrhoea where the stools are greenish.

It is called the ‘liver salt’ since the liver is often swollen, there is excessive bile (as in jaundice) and the gall bladder is sensitive. The taste is bitter, the tongue is coated dirty green-brown, and the discharges are greenish.

Nat sulf it is used to cleanse the cellular wastes from the cells and the intercellular fluid. Hence, it is often called the detox salt. It is also used to treat intermittent fevers (that come and go); influenza with coughs and colds; rheumatism due to toxaemia; and headaches which are dull and occipital (at the base of the head). It also relieves the hangover that arises from taking excessive drinks.

A feeling of dullness and stuffiness in damp or wet weather always calls for this salt.


The deficiency of this salt affects keratin, the fibrous tissue in the body. It gives rise to weakness in the connective tissues of bones, glands, hair, mucous membranes, nails, skin and teeth. There is a typical brittleness of hair and nails; and the skin develops wrinkles and cracks.

This salt will get rid of superfluous organic matter in the body. It functions like a surgeon in finishing abscesses, boils, carbuncles, corns and styes. It hastens the suppuration or pus-formation process in boils and abscesses that are painful, but do not discharge easily. It will extrude foreign bodies like thorns from under the skin. In gout or rheumatic affections it will push the tissues to throw out the accumulated waste. It will act on post-surgical scars that are inflamed, painful, and slow to heal.

It will relieve chronic swellings in glands, in the throat, in the ear, and of the sinuses.

This tissue-salt is most useful in long continued infections and in chronic skin disorders. The difference between the action of Cal sulf and Silicea is that Silicea ripens the abscess and promotes suppuration, whereas Cal sulf restrains the suppuration to cleanse and close the wound.

The Silicea person is typically sensitive, chilly, and sweaty; he catches cold easily; becomes chilled by cold wind; and lacks stamina and easily worn out by work. The body is imperfectly nourished due to deficient assimilation. The perspiration smells foul; the skin itches; milk is not digested easily; and many symptoms are sensitive to the Moon phases, particularly to full Moon and new Moon.

Sodium is associated with troubles of digestion and elimination. It gives rise to symptoms like acidity, sluggishness and rheumatism.
Potassium is associated with auto-intoxication as in blood diseases and nerve troubles. It is also associated with mucus and skin disorders.
Iron is associated with circulation and oxygen starvation.
Silicea is associated with constitutional weakness and deformities in nails and teeth. And

Freedom & Contentment — how to experience them

The spiritual tradition in ancient India talks in terms of karma and dharma. When you act with personal or selfish motives you generate some imbalance, which is called karma. When you do what is proper and act without personal motives you generate balance and harmony, which is called dharma. Freedom and contentment are built on the foundation of Dharma.

In society the acts of dharma are fairness in dealings; balance in rights and obligations; restricting individual freedom where it transgresses the freedom of other people; subordinating personal benefit for the benefit of the team, group or unity; and serving the genuine needs of others.

True freedom and contentment are inner-life attainments. And to experience them you have to make some adjustments in your attitude and assumptions according to the rules of dharma or proper living. What are these changes and how can you make them?

1. Make the necessary inner changes

The ancient sages believed that there is a pre-decided element regarding all the major events of our life. The events are outcomes of past actions; other players are involved with the events; and there are hidden intelligences in the interior worlds that have their own agenda. Hence, it is said that we arrive at the events of our life. Our efforts in the present only make some cosmetic changes or adjustments.

So, whether we like it or not we have to accept the happenings of our life. We can do it in the same way as we accept other things that we cannot control – like the weather, the past, the market behaviour, etc. When we can do that, we can live peacefully and without experiencing frustration. On the other hand, if we keep on protesting or defying the situations of our life, we only hurt ourselves.

Whereas we cannot control the events that are happening now or are decided for us, there are many things that we can control. For example, we can control our expectations and how we respond to other people and events. We can always choose how we interpret the happenings in the world. Hence, instead of crying over the things we cannot control, we have to focus on controlling the things we can control.

First let us distinguish between what is under our control and what is not under our control: Our actions are always under our control, but another person’s actions are usually not under our control. We can influence other people’s behaviour by how we relate with them (by how we regard them, take interest in them, etc.) but we can never control them sufficiently. We must accept this reality just as we accept the other things that we cannot control.

When we keep our focus on controlling the things that are under our control, our attention is automatically directed to our own actions. We become more aware of our attitude, beliefs and actions; and the effect they have on other people and the happenings in our life. When we can observe all this, we become intensely aware of the inner changes that we need to make to be able to live a more peaceful and contented life.

You begin by becoming clear about what changes are under your control and what changes are not under your control. Then you accept the things you cannot change, and focus on making the changes you really need to make.

Here we explain the rules of dharma so that you can know the changes that you need to make.

2. Freedom and how to achieve it

Is freedom doing whatever we please, or does our freedom arise from understanding the limits of our power and the limits set by society, the natural law, and a higher authority?

To appreciate the idea of freedom first we have to understand how our wants control our actions: When we want something desperately, we get totally focused on having it irrespective of whether it is good for us, appropriate for us, or morally right for us. The only thing we see is the object that satisfies our want. We disregard other things or undervalue them. In this way our wants control our actions.

To experience freedom first we have to weaken our bondage (slavery) to our wants – to the cravings and compulsions that arise from within our nature. To do that, we have to deliberately regulate our wants. We have to give due regard to what is proper for us in society (according to the moral law) and what is enough (according to the natural law). We have to accept our limitations and the inevitable; and learn to work with them rather than try to fight them.

If we become easily obsessed by the desire to do things that are not right for us or which are not within our reach, our freedom is actually lost! If we cannot exercise control over our wants, the desires in our mind and body will enslave us. Then we cannot perform the duty of our roles properly. Then our actions will become out of sorts and we shall experience helplessness and frustration!

True freedom is not having ease and comfort; it is not bossing over others; and it is not doing whatever comes into our mind regardless of others. To experience true freedom you have to be able to conduct yourself according to the existing situation without giving in to your personal tendencies or temptations. You have to accept the limits of your power and the limits that are set on you by a greater authority.

3. Approach life as a banquet

Sometimes we think that if we don’t grab our share in life we shall miss out; if we don’t horde our wealth we shall get depleted. We think like this when we feel insecure; it causes us to grab things.

However, as a human being we are a part of a larger network that is governed by a greater intelligence and authority. We are connected to others on the inner planes; there is a law governing human life; and there is a greater intelligence in the inner worlds that administers justice and looks over our affairs. As a result we are only given things according to the needs of our roles or according to what we have deserved (according to the law of karma).

So, when we take the roles that we are given, we have to also trust that the greater authority will provide us with what we need to fulfil our roles. It will not make us struggle unnecessarily. When we understand this fact we can behave graciously in all situations. We know that we shall be given a part to play in the drama of life on earth; and that we shall be provided with what we need to fulfil that role or part.

When we understand this, we can approach our life as a BANQUET: When dishes are passed on to us, we take a moderate portion. If a dish passes us, we enjoy what is already on our plate. Or, if the dish hasn’t been passed on to us yet, we wait patiently for our turn to arrive.

When we choose to act according to dharma, we can never become jealous of others. When we find that someone has succeeded, we consider that today it is their time to succeed. Our time will also come. However, if we become impatient and grab for things before it is their time to arrive, we spoil everything.

The rule is: Always behave graciously in life and keep an attitude of polite restraint. Trust that what is due to you will come to you in the natural course, when your time has come.

4. Act well the part that is given to you

We get to choose only some of our roles life. Most of the roles that we have are given to us.

We are like actors in a play. A greater authority has assigned us with some roles without consulting us! Some people will act in a short drama, and others will act in a big movie. Some are assigned the part of a poor or retarded person and some are given the role of a celebrity or a leader.

Although we cannot control which roles are assigned to us, we are always responsible to act our given roles as best as we can, and to refrain from protesting them.

This brings us to the classical issue of dharma: Should we crave for different or better roles or should we seek to perform well in the roles that are given to us? Does our true satisfaction arise from getting into positions of great opportunity or does it arise from how well we perform in the roles we are given?

To choose here we have to see things in the correct perspective. We must understand that our true happiness does not arise from the roles themselves. It arises from within us as we perform the roles.

Thus, true fulfilment arises when we perform well in the roles that we are given. The outer conditions only provide us with the situations in life. However, it is up to us to make ourselves happy or sad as we pass through these situations.

Thus, it is a deception to think that our happiness arises from getting better or more attractive roles. Further, if we keep on craving for better roles in life, we shall remain continuously dissatisfied.

Hence, seek to perform the roles that you are given as best as you can – without protesting your situation. In whatever circumstances you find yourself, give an impeccable performance. If you are a teacher, teach well; if you are a maid, serve well; and if you are leader, lead well.

5. All advantages have their price

Does somebody enjoy the privileges, the opportunities, or the honour that you desire? Does it make you feel jealous, envious, inferior, or unfortunate?

We become jealous of others when we think that they got it easier or they did not deserve what they got. However, this is a deception. It arises because we have a partial or limited view of things.

When we take a wider view of things, we can see that people get authority and resources according to the needs of their roles or they get it according to their karma. The law of justice has no favourites — it works invariably for all.

If we look at situations carefully, we can find advantages and disadvantages in every situation. Hence, no situation is absolutely more favourable or unfavourable. Further, authority is not merely a privilege. Authority and responsibility always go together. They are like the two ends of the same stick. When we pick up one end, we also get the other.

Still further, our happiness also does not really depend on the situation we are in. It depends more on what we make out of the situation that we are in. We can never earn the same reward as others without employing similar methods, or without investing a similar amount of time and effort. It is unreasonable to think that we can have the rewards without paying the price.

Hence, we should not envy those who have more than us. They had no real advantage over us. They have simply paid the price for their reward.

The true reward that people get in real life can also be very deceptive. The saying is, “The roses come with the thorns”; but the thorns are not always apparent to a superficial view. A man may have a beautiful wife, but she may crib all the time because she was used to having too much attention. An actress may have to show a happy face even when she inwardly feels degraded by what she is asked to do.

In our life it is always up to us to choose from the opportunities we get; and to decide how much we shall invest in it. For some things we may consider the price as too high: It may cost us our integrity; we may be forced to praise or appease someone whom we cannot respect; we may have to do the work for which we are not apt; or we may have to convince the people of things that we ourselves don’t believe in!

The truth is that all privileges have their price. So, before you demand something, ask the golden question: What is the price and are you willing to pay it?

6. Our duties are revealed by our relationships

In society we are not an isolated entity, but a unique and irreplaceable part of a network in a perfectly ordered human community. Hence, it is important to know where we fit into this web or network.

Our duties in society are defined by our relation with others. To know our duties we have to look carefully at the people we are connected with. Our duties emerge naturally from our family, our neighbourhood, our workplace, our community or our nation. Our role as a parent, a child, a wife, a neighbour, a manager, a citizen, etc. arises from our duty. Once we know our role to the people we are linked with, we can intuitively know what are the right things to do.

For example, if a person is our father, certain emotional and practical claims follow from this relationship. There is a natural link between us, and accordingly, we are obliged to care for him in old age; to listen to his advice even when we think differently; and to regard him with respect.

However, let us suppose that he is not a good father — that he is uneducated, crude, or holds outdated views. Then we have to ask ourselves: Does nature give everyone an ideal father, or just a father? When it comes to our duty as a son or daughter, whatever our father’s nature may be, whatever his personal habits are is secondary. The greater authority has not designed people or circumstance according to our tastes. Whether we find this person to be agreeable or not, he is still our father, and so it is our duty to live up to our obligations.

Suppose we have a brother or sister who treats us badly. Why should that make a difference? We still have a moral obligation to recognise and maintain our fundamental duty to him or her. The key to dharma is not focus on what he or she does, but simply look to ourselves and try to serve the role the greater authority has assigned to us – and to do it to the best of our ability.

True and authentic freedom places demands on you. It requires that you accept the obligations of your role and perform your duties sincerely. So, let others behave as they will; that is not within your control anyway, and so it should not concern you very much. The only question that should concern you is: “What is your duty and are you serving it?”

7. Control your interpretations

When we carry out our actions according to our duty, the greater intelligence or authority will support us. Then, we shall not feel victimised by the words or deeds of others. If others are selfish or ungrateful, we should take it that they are performing their duty poorly. Why should we let that bother us?

Except for extreme physical abuse, other people cannot hurt us unless we allow them to. If we don’t consent to be hurt, we won’t be hurt. Whatever happens in the world outside, it is always up to us to choose how we interpret it. So, our interpretation of events is a choice over which we can have absolute control!

People think of events or people as being good or bad, but we can ask: “What is a good event?” or “What is a bad event?” There is really no such thing. If there is a fire in our enemy’s camp, we may call it a good event. If there is a fire in our camp, we may call it a bad event. Otherwise the event by itself is value neutral. It simply happens. In the same way, there are really no ‘good people’ or ‘bad people’ out there. Each person has come to earth with his or her purpose. For some time destiny brings some people together. Then we find some people to be agreeable and some to be disagreeable.

Hence the rule is: Never react to events. Instead, exercise control over your interpretation of the events. When you can exercise that control, the events cannot hurt you or make you feel sad

8. Serve the greater purpose

When we consider the future, we must understand that all situations and events unfold as they do regardless of how we feel about them. Our hopes and fears sway us, but not the events!

Hence, a wise person does not project his hopes and fears onto the future. Such projections can only generate fantasies. There is a place for planning and making provision for uncertainties. But true preparation for life consists in developing self-control and good personal habits. And to make this preparation, we have to review our actions from time to time so that we can keep them free from the hold of fear, greed, jealousy or neglect.

Do not allow the happenings in your life to distract you from serving your greater purpose. To serve the greater purpose, just keep one question in your mind: “What is the proper thing for me to do right now and how can I get on to doing it?”

The Cholesterol Story

Read this and you won’t let them fool you again

Cholesterol is not a bad guy. It performs many vital functions in the human body. However, it has been wrongly implicated in heart disease. This error has misguiding many innocent patients into using cholesterol lowering drugs. We have written this informative article to separate the myth from the reality.


Cholesterol is not a bad guy. It is needed to ensure proper functioning of the cell membrane. The liver make bile acids from cholesterol; and these acids are vital to digestion and for the absorption of fats, oils, and fat-soluble vitamins. Many important hormones (e.g., sex hormones, adrenal corticosteroids such as aldosterone and cortisol) and vitamin D are made from cholesterol. The skin uses cholesterol for protection against wear and tear due to sun, wind, and water. Cholesterol is helpful in healing damaged skin – it prevents infections from foreign agents. Cholesterol also serves as an antioxidant when needed, and it protects us from certain cancers. Further, it clogs the leakages in the membrane of cells. Without cholesterol we would die; and too little cholesterol in the blood should be regarded as a greater disease than a higher level of cholesterol!

The liver makes the cholesterol that is necessary for the needs of the entire body. It makes it from the acetates it derives by breaking down fruit sugars and protein and from the essential fatty acids. Hence, it is not necessary to get cholesterol from diet. The body cells can synthesize it as and when required. For example, when we drink alcohol, it dissolves in and fluidizes the cellular membranes. In response the cells build more cholesterol into the membrane and try to fix the leaky state. As the alcohol wears off the membrane hardens. Then the cells remove some of the cholesterol from the membrane and re-establish normal membrane fluidity. The excess cholesterol is hooked up to an essential fatty acid (for example, omega-3) and sent via blood to the liver to be converted into bile salts for excretion (given the presence of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and enzymes in the liver). The bile salts are released into the intestines, where they aid in the digestion of fats. From there they are eliminated or reabsorbed and recycled.

The Dogma: “Cholesterol Causes Heart and Vascular Disease

512px-Diagram_of_the_human_heart_(cropped).svgThe commonly accepted theory of cardiovascular disease states that when too much cholesterol builds up in the body, it is deposited in the arterial walls, causing atherosclerosis – a narrowing of the arteries and vessels. The excess of cholesterol and saturated fatty acids make the blood platelets ‘sticky’, and thereby increase the risk of a clot. And a clot can increase the risk of angina, heart attack, stroke, gangrene, as well as troubles like blindness, deafness, oedema, and kidney failure.

These claims are not proven facts, but only theories that have become a dogma. The medical data suggests the reverse is true. Although the general cholesterol levels have been lowered during the past 40 years, yet the number of cardiovascular patients has increased! Some doctors actually suggest that the cholesterol story, as publicised by the medical profession, is a big health scandal. Truth is that: “The cholesterol lowering enterprise is actually turning a large percentage of our healthy population into patients!

The reason for this is not difficult to imagine. Cholesterol scare is big business for the laboratories and drug companies. The new generation of cholesterol-lowering drugs like simvastatin and pravastatin are very expensive, but offer a risk reduction of heart attack of only 2 percent (which is to say nothing). In this context, Udo Erasmus wrote, “In spite of new findings, the dinosaur of the old dogma continues in medical practice. Economics rather than health or truth drives the old beast. The practice of medicine, contrary to idealistic notions, popular beliefs, and the desperate hope of the ignorant and seriously ill, is not about care… or cure… but about making money.… Change comes slowly and is strongly resisted.” Cholesterol free label is also a powerful marketing gimmick used by manufacturers of vegetable oils and margarines. However, their products actually cause ‘free radical damage’ — which is a bigger culprit in cases of coronary artery diseases and cancers.

What Does “High” Cholesterol Mean?

Firstly, there is no truth in the classification of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol; all cholesterol serves some function. LDLs (the so-called bad guys) are just as important and good as HDLs (the so-called good guys). The LDLs carry cholesterol, triglycerides, and fat-soluble vitamins to cells where they are needed; whereas the HDLs take them back to the liver as required. The confusion exists because a high LDL reading simply means that our system is being overloaded by cholesterol either from food, from abnormally high synthesis, and/or from too slow removal. Further, it is now well established that the drugs that lower cholesterol are not found to (statistically) reduce heart attacks or deaths from atherosclerosis.

On the other hand there is a problem with ‘low levels’ of cholesterol. It also reduces the numbers of serotonin brain receptors. And this in turn increases anxiety, depression, and psychoses, attempted suicides, and creates predisposition to dementia! Low levels of cholesterol can also affect the capacity of the endocrine system to manufacture hormones. And this deficiency can give rise to many imbalances like lower libido, disturbed menses (e.g., amenorrhea), etc.

Whereas low levels of serum cholesterol do not prevent heart attacks, they can be associated with the causes of cancer since the cancer patients almost invariably have low serum cholesterol levels. Cholesterol acts as antioxidant against lipid per-oxidation and it may turn out that cholesterol is actually a part of our defence system against cancer!

Much more is known about cholesterol today than was known in 1956 when the ‘cholesterol-coronary-vascular disease theory’ was actually cooked up. Now it is known that there is no truth in that theory, but the dogma that ‘higher level of cholesterol is bad’ has been hammered in. On the other side, it is clear today that polyunsaturated oils, rancid oils and margarines are at least partly to blame for the increase in incidence of coronary vascular disease and sudden heart attacks in affluent countries.

Still further, abnormally elevated serum cholesterol can be merely a sign of nutrient deficiency. The best solution to increased cholesterol level is to ensure adequate nutrient intake and waste elimination (reduce toxaemia), and trust nature to do the needful. Rather than trying to reduce cholesterol levels with drugs, we must take it as a sign to correct some faults in our lifestyle, diet, and eating habits. The saying is: “Don’t shoot the messenger.” Many wise doctors today recommend that you should forget about cholesterol tests forever; they mean nothing, and the costs simply fund the coffers of those who perpetuate the myth.

Dr. Lundell on Cholestrol and Heart Disease

Here are some very interesting observations made in internet articles by Dr. Dwight Lundell. The doctor was the Chief of Surgery at Banner Heart Hospital, AZ, USA, and the founder of Healthy Humans Foundation.

Dr. Lundell says: “We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong… I trained for many years with other prominent physicians labelled ‘opinion makers.’ Bombarded with scientific literature, continually attending education seminars, we the opinion makers insisted that heart disease resulted from the simple fact of elevated blood cholesterol.

The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake. However, this is not working! These recommendations are no longer scientifically or morally defensible, and the truth is that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease. This finding is slowly leading to a paradigm shift in how heart disease and other chronic ailments will be treated in future.

SIMPLY STATED, without inflammation being present in the body, cholesterol would not accumulate in the wall of the blood vessels and cause heart disease and strokes. The inflammation causes cholesterol to become trapped in the arteries.

Inflammation by itself is not a complicated phenomenon. It is simply the body’s natural defence against bacteria, virus, toxins, irritants undigested foods that have managed to enter the blood stream. See leaky gut – the modern epidemic

Insight into Heart Disease

Here first we consider the structural causes of heart disease: the hardening of the arteries and accumulation of plaque. Then we discuss the deeper causes and the remedial measures

Hardening of the arteries or Arteriosclerosis is a degenerative change in the arterial walls, affecting first the middle and later the inner layers of the blood vessel, resulting in loss of elasticity and possible calcification.

Atherosclerosis is a degenerative change in the arterial walls that principally affects the larger arteries such as the aorta, coronary, and cerebral (512px-Diagram_of_the_human_heart_(cropped).svgbrain) vessels. Systemic changes also occur in other arteries. The basic culprit here is ‘plaque’ formation on the inner walls of the vessels. It causes the narrowing of the arteries and the clogging that can arise when the plaque breaks loose and goes into the blood circulation. The plaque is made of fatty substances; cholesterol; waste products from the cells; calcium; and fibrin (a stringy material that helps clot blood). The plaque formation process itself stimulates the cells of the artery wall to produce substances that accumulate in the inner layer.

The common SYMPTOMS are: Cold extremities, lethargy, dizziness, senility, thinking difficulty, high blood pressure, pain in legs on exertion, angina (stab in the heart), blurred vision, breathing difficulty, palpitations, heart attacks, and clogging inside a blood vessel.


  • Emotional (lack of a sense of being loved, of belonging, of being wanted or appreciated)
  • Using rancid oils and margarine in the diet
  • Using (particularly reusing) unsaturated vegetable oils in cooking
  • Using homogenized dairy products
  • Excess saturated fats (those commonly found in animal products, but not in Ghee)
  • Deficiency of fat emulsifiers
  • Excess refined salt
  • Excess sugar (sugar increases triglycerides, platelet adhesiveness, uric acid levels, and blood pressure)
  • Excess of vitamin D
  • Regular use of coffee, tea, alcohol and tobacco
  • Lack of exercise and obesity
  • Elevated triglyceride and uric acid levels
  • Persistent high blood pressure


Heart disease is the number one killer in developed nations today. However, it is more the result of a faulty lifestyle; due to psychosomatic causes; and not so much the result of a dietary excess or deficiency. However, the modern people do not want to acknowledge such causes. Instead, an enormous emphasis is given to avoiding the ‘fast food’ eating habit; to a diet high in polyunsaturated vegetable oils; to the consumption of rancid oils, refined carbohydrates, modern day dairy products and meats.

The tendency of researchers has been to try, whenever possible, to find a single, simple “something” and label it as the disease factor and an enormous industry is built around it. First, it was ‘cholesterol’. Then they find that the Cholesterol factor is not the devil, and it is more beneficial than harmful. So they jump to something else and say that the rancid (stale) oil products are the primary factor, not simply cholesterol. But the cholesterol scare was, and in India it still is big business for the doctors, the laboratories, and the drug companies. So they don’t change the prescription. The new generation of cholesterol-lowering drugs like simvastatin and pravastatin are very expensive, but offer a risk reduction of heart attack of only 2 percent (if at all).

The next they take on the ‘modern day dairy products’. These products have changed considerably over the past hundred years. For example, the fat molecules in milk are broken up into easily absorbed particles through the process of homogenization. This may give the milk a longer shelf-life, but it has also resulted in cases of atherosclerosis at an early age of five! The milk is pasteurized at high temperatures, which creates trans-fatty acids (form the cis-form), which have the capacity to damage the arterial walls and initiate the process of sclerosis. Thus, it increases the risks of a stroke or heart attack. It is no wonder that heart disease, which was once the disease of old age, is now commonly being found in persons in their late twenties!

Homogenization of milk is particularly harmful since it allows a substance called xanthine oxidase to enter the bloodstream. This substance gets into arterial walls and destroys plasmalogen, which makes up about a third of the arterial cell membrane. That leads to integrating cholesterol into the cells, which in turn creates more rigidity and other pathologic changes in the arterial tissue.

However, let us not get lost in searching for secondary factors. The primary factor in heart disease is psychosomatic. People who have not taken things (troubles) to the heart, who feel enthusiastic about living, who feel secure within themselves, and who do not feel rejected (by family, friends, or God), are certainly not the potential candidates for cardiovascular diseases!


Coronary bypass operations have become commonplace and are regarded as the “cure” for coronary atherosclerosis and angina. A segment of vein from the leg is grafted to bypass the narrowed artery segments in one or all three of the coronary arteries. Yes, this treatment does dramatically relieve the immediate threat of imminent death due to heart failure, but it neglects the fact that the disease is basically ‘systemic’ – that is, it affects the entire circulatory system and not just the heart! Further, this grafting does nothing to prevent further degeneration of even the newly transplanted arteries! Hence, at best it can only be an emergency measure.

This kind of consideration and treatment would be quite acceptable if the causes of this condition were not known and cure or healing was impossible. However, both of them are not true. Even the most advanced cases, short of a terminally fatal heart attack or severe infarcts have been successfully treated by doctors like Dean Ornish.

Further, the once there is a heart disease Aspirin is used to ‘thin the blood’ to maintain a smooth flow and avoid plaque formation. However, the regular use of Aspirin has many negative side effects like nausea and vomiting; gastric ulcers; liver damage; gastrointestinal bleeding; allergic reactions; and deficiency of iron, minerals and vitamins. The net result is to further weaken the already weak patient. It is interesting to note that Magnesium can do this job better than Aspirin. It reduces abnormal platelet adhesiveness; it is a potent vascodilator and anticoagulant; it is a natural calcium-channel-blocker; and it has no side effects! High magnesium foods include dark leafy greens, nuts, beans, whole grains, almonds, black beans, bananas, and many dry fruits like figs. It can also be taken as a supplement as Magnesium Chelate or Citrate (in 300 mg to 2 g doses per day). The biochemic tissue salt ‘Calceria Fluoride’ is certainly helpful in managing Arteriosclerosis. Again the best treatment is to be given kind attention and to feel loved. However, that medicine is the hardest to procure in modern times. The people just don’t know how to get it.

Hypertension and Blood Pressure

Blood pressure (BP) is the common symptom of hypertension. It arises naturally with age and when it persists it is more often due to psychological factors, infection or malignancy. However, the symptoms of BP are wrongfully being treated by modern day physicians with drugs. Here we discuss the problem of hypertension, the mechanism of BP in the body and some simple self-help remedial measures.

Blood pressure is measured by two numbers: the top number is the systolic pressure or the pressure on the arteries when the heart is pumping blood; and the bottom number is the diastolic pressure or the pressure on the arteries when the heart is at rest. When both the readings are high, it is considered as clinical hypertension. The diastolic reading is usually considered the more significant since it shows the pressure on the arteries when they are at rest. The general classification is as follows:

  • A normal blood pressure number is below 120/80;
  • Pre-hypertension is diagnosed between 120/80 – 139/89;
  • Stage-1 hypertension is between 140/90 – 159/99; and
  • Stage-2 hypertension is blood pressure above 160/100.

Some doctors prescribe drug treatment when a patient has reached the pre-hypertension stage. However, this is quite unnecessary since this level of hypertension can be easily addressed through dietary measures. Stage-1 hypertension is commonly present in people above the age of 55 years. It is natural due to aging, and it can also be addressed through dietary and lifestyle measures. There is no genuine evidence to support the need for medicines even at this stage! Stage-2 hypertension is a sign that some deterioration has happened somewhere in the body. As a precautionary measure to avoid unnecessary complications, you can consider taking medication. However, in addition to treating the BP symptom, you also have to find the deeper cause for this symptom and treat it.

Most cases of hypertension can be effectively managed with appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes, and there is insufficient reason to resort to the drug therapy.

What is the mechanism of BP?

Although there are several factors that may raise blood pressure, such as increased cardiac output, an increase in the viscosity of the blood, or the peripheral resistance due to narrowing of the blood vessels (as in the arterioles). This narrowing of the arteries is usually compounded by physical and emotional stress.

Earlier many authorities attributed the high blood pressure to high cholesterol levels in the blood, but this hypothesis was subsequently proved to be false! Medical science now attributes the primary cause of heart disease and high blood pressure to other factors like the consumption of rancid (spoilt) oils. Many changes occur in the natural oil when it is processed at high temperatures. This makes hydrogenated oils such as margarine and the reuse of frying oils as aggravating factors.


Most cases of high blood pressure are both treatable and preventable without using drugs — and most physicians also know it. Then why do they not use the alternatives? A problem arises because both the prevention and treatment of hypertension requires some lifestyle changes; and these changes are both difficult to make and they can be time-consuming. So they emphasise the secondary dietary factors that support high BP. They are the excessive consumption of animal fats and rancid (spoilt) oils; fibre deficiency due to consumption of excess refined carbohydrates; and the excessive intake of refined salt (use only rock salt or an unrefined sea salt). In addition, you can shift from meat diets to plant-based diets and diets high in fruits and vegetables. Still further, consider taking three-day elimination fast (detoxification) every alternate month. Such measures will quickly relieve the hypertension and normalise your blood pressure.

The chief lifestyle factors are prolonged physical or emotional stress and the lack of demanding physical exercise. Hence, it always helps to take a walk daily; do regular aerobic exercises; and practice relaxation techniques.

The drugs treatment for the symptom of high blood pressure is directed to either reduce cardiac output and peripheral resistance; or have diuretic in action to reduce total blood volume. However all these hypertensive drugs have side-effects, and hence their long-term is certainly undesirable. The BP pills deceive the patients by giving them a false sense of security by simply bringing down their blood pressure without attending to the underlying deeper cause of the hypertension!

1. Understanding Karma and Destiny

People often ask: “Why are we born in a particular country or family? Why are some people healthy, rich or successful whereas some others are handicapped, poor or unfortunate? Why do we easily forge bonds with some people and find it so difficult to get on with some others? Why do some of us have an easy life while others have to struggle all the way?”

You can understand many such things by considering the Law of Karma. The law tells us that much of the destiny we experience today is the result of what we had done in the past; that we have all along been shaping our destiny, but earlier we were not aware of the process. In this workshop you understand the law of karma and how to use it to remove the unnecessary suffering from your life.

When you are ignorant of this law you make mistakes that violate the law. Then you suffer the consequences. As you develop some awareness of the law you conduct yourself better. Then you make fewer violations, and it reduces your suffering and helplessness. When you acquire mastery over this law you become the CAPTAIN of your ship. Then you can steer around the obstacles in your life and become a source of happiness to yourself.

The discussion is directed to the questions: What are the causes behind the events of my life? Is there natural justice or do I have to fight for my rights in society? When I faced with different choices, what criteria will guide me in making the correct choice? How can I learn to live a happy, meaningful and a fulfilling life?

5. Living by Intuition

Intuition is the guiding voice of the soul. When we listen to our intuition, our life becomes more interesting; we see a purpose to everything; and we feel a sense of wonder. Although everyone is intuitive to an extent, this ability can be greatly enhanced by doing some spiritual practices.

The basic step for becoming intuitive is to shift the focus of our life from our ordinary nature, which is governed by mental preferences, to our higher nature, which sees the ways of the soul. Once we get into a condition where we can spontaneously call for intuition, we can allow it to guide our actions and give a deeper meaning and purpose to our life.

6. The Spiritual Tradition of the Ancient Hindus

8. How to Recognise a Sage?

This course is based on wisdom of the book: Tao Te Ching. The Tao is a universal awareness that underlies all things. Hence, by aligning your ways with the way of the Tao you can attain inner freedom, transcendental peace, and deep contentment in your life. However, the Tao is very subtle. It can only be grasped with a mind that is without personal motives. So, how can you pursue the Tao?

Master Lao Tzu gives the clues: First, follow the law of heaven and purify your motives. Next, find a Sage, a living master. Then, track the ways of the Sage, for the Sage naturally follows the Tao. However, there is a difficulty since the Sage does not show himself in society. So, how can you recognise the Sage? Here we address this issue.

A Journey Into the Higher Worlds

A Pilgrimage into the Cosmos Within

We are born with a mind that directs our attention outward, towards things in the external world. Hence, we do not see the interior world or understand the realities of inner life. As a result we are easily confused about the true purpose of our life on earth or what we have come here to achieve.

To understand such things in the spiritual context, we have to journey into our interior; into the deeper realms of our own consciousness. What do we find? Here are some insights of this journey.

1. Our condition at the beginning

In the beginning, that is before we undertake the journey within, into the interior of our own consciousness, our attention is exclusively turned outward, towards things in the external world. To begin this journey we have to withdraw some of our attention from outer things and direct it inward, into our interior.

At first this will be very difficult to do. Our mind is like a restless monkey. It keeps on hopping from one thing to another. It keeps us continuously distracts by outer things. We get fascinated by them. However, we cannot dwell on any one thing for sufficient time to really understand it. So, we observe everything superficially, and our understanding remains shallow.

Our attention it totally caught up with personal thoughts. So we keep on think of ourselves, our pending matters, our desires, our possessions, or our future.

2. Taking control of our attention

We can change this wandering tendency of the mind by practising concentration. Earlier our mind was like a ‘wild horse’, constantly resisting our control and distracting our attention. But as our concentration improves, this wild horse gets tamed. Our mind begins to listen to us; our attention follows our will.

We can use concentration practice to bring together all the scattered forces of our attention. When these different forces come together they are compelled to adjust and integrate themselves under the central leadership of our will. It makes our will strong and powerful.

We can use this strong will-power to control the thoughts and emotions that frequently occupy our mind. We do it by simply accepting the thoughts and emotions that we want, and by rejecting those we don’t want. In this way we can remove the distracting thoughts and disturbing emotions from our mind. It will make our mind becomes calm, alert and one-pointed.

Such a mind allows us to observe its contents – the thoughts and emotions that occupy it; and the mindset – the beliefs and tendencies that we use to interpret the happenings of life. We see how our habits and tendencies compel our behaviour. We see how these forces dominate our thinking and feelings, and decide our beliefs.

Now we can begin to change this inner situation; to free our mind from the compulsions created by our habits and tendencies. However, when we try to change or re-set our habits and tendencies is that we only succeed in making some superficial or cosmetic changes; and even these changes are not long lasting. That is, when we relax our control the habits and tendencies tend to return.

That happens because our habits and tendencies are rooted in the subconscious, whereas our will-power is mainly functional in the conscious mind.

3. The nature of the subconscious

The subconscious is a dark region of our mind. It is called ‘dark’ because here we do not see things clearly. Hence, we cannot observe how the forces work in this region.

We see things clearly at the surface, in the conscious mind; but here also our control is limited. That happens because some of these forces are supplied from below, from the subconscious.

So, what happens when we try to uproot a small or insignificant habit or tendency? The habit tends to return. That happens since the habit is empowered by the thoughts, emotions and desires that are connected with it in the subconscious. Since we do not see these connections clearly we take a compromising approach and settle for some small adjustments.

4. What we see in the subconscious

However, we can learn to take the ‘light of our awareness’ into the subconscious and observe these forces. Then we see the ‘hidden contents’ of our mind – our suppressed desires and emotions. They live here, and every now and then they come into our conscious mind and make us indulge them. Further, they make us justify having them. It gives them a hold in our nature and the right to return. In this way they break our will to resist them.

When we can see the working of these forces clearly, we know that our tendencies have friends. They have made connections, associations and alliances with other forces in the subconscious. So, when we try to overcome even a simple habit, we are not we are not dealing with just one thing, but we are dealing with a whole web of forces. This web of forces is strong, and it can resist our effort to change. So what seems to be simple actually turns out to be difficult and complex.

The habits and tendencies of our nature are like ‘entities’ that have a parasite-like existence. They feed on our attention by keeping a hold over our vital urges, inclinations, imagination and mindset. However, once we see all this clearly we can begin to uproot our tendencies and change our habits.

5. The inner battle

Before we change or uproot any habit or tendency, first we have to weaken it. We do it by finding its connections in our mind and disconnecting them. For example, if we want to overcome our craving for some food, we must begin by developing an aversion to having it. It will reduce its power.

Initially the tendency is strong like a lion, but after we cut its connections it becomes weak like mouse. We cannot throw out the lion, but we can easily close up the mouse hole.

Once the tendency has lost its power, it cannot move us with its suggestions; it cannot decide our behaviour; and it cannot make us dance to its tune.

However, these entities don’t leave us without putting up a fight. They may try to seduce us into believing that a life without (indulging) them will be dull, dry and uninteresting. And if we are taken up by such suggestions, we give them the right to continue or persist. Then they can again become active and try to dominate our awareness.

It is expected that there will be many battles inside the mind, and so for some time we may struggle. But if we persist, we will succeed. And the behaviour, urges, beliefs and philosophy that were built around this habit or tendency will also change.

6. After the victory

The entities in our subconscious do not have a power of their own; they merely draw it from our will-power. So, when we overcome some habit or tendency, our will-power gets stronger. And with a stronger will-power it will be easier for us to overcome other bigger or more vital habits and tendencies.

We can continue this process until we have overcome all the contradictory forces within our nature. It will overcome our inner resistance to doing anything. And as a result, our internal conflicts, aversions, and subconscious reactions to the happenings in the world will also disappear.

Earlier the forces in the subconscious would project illusions in our mind and tempt us or deceive us to scatter our force. But after we have cleared these entities from our subconscious, we do not experience wish or fear projections. Hence, we are not deceived easily. The light of our intellect pass right through the subconscious, so we see everything clearly. We do not act in ignorance and we are not easily fooled.

In the earlier stages of our spiritual practice we had to make a lot of effort to concentrate. Now our attention is free from the binding influences from the subconscious. Hence, no extra effort is needed. Our concentration is ‘at will’. We simply focus on something and our attention gets concentrated around it.

7. The separate awareness

Then we can keep the habit of keeping our mind in a concentrated state. It develops a ‘Separate Awareness’ within our consciousness. Something separates from our personal nature, but remains within our consciousness. It is a calm, wide and alert state of mind. It sees everything clearly, but it remains unaffected by what it sees. We can use this separate awareness to develop our insight and have a multidimensional point of view.

Initially this ‘separate awareness’ remains in the background. So we have to concentrate upon it to access it. But gradually it develops into a faculty that we can use like other senses. It gives us clarity of vision and a sense of direction in life matters – it tells us where we should look for the truth. We still have to use the mind to work out the details, but with this faculty we don’t have to depend on mental inferences.

8. The purpose of the separate awareness

The separate awareness greatly enlarges our field of knowledge and action. We can use it to look into the ‘mind of things’ and know the inner qualities and hidden motives in anything.

Further we can learn to transfer our will on to the separate awareness. It enables us to act on the inner planes of the cosmos and influence the happenings from there.

However, the true purpose of this faculty is not for making some things happen, but it is for integrating the forces within our own consciousness. It will change ‘the state’ of our consciousness and how we function with it.

9. Awareness beyond the mind

As we develop further, our awareness begins to recede inward. We become more conscious of our interior. First the contents of our mind (the thoughts, emotions, feelings and memories) become objective. Then the entire the interior worlds becomes objective, like external things.

Then we can awaken in our dreams and travel consciously in the interior worlds. We can make the light of our awareness bright and carry the greater light into the interior worlds. We become aware of so many things that earlier we could not even imagine.

At a certain stage in our development something turns over within our consciousness and we awaken inside the separate awareness. An inner veil is lifted, which enables us to become directly aware of things by making an inner contact. Then the automatic subconscious processes that were earlier going on in the mind also get discontinued.

Earlier we were led by social values and mental-inferences of right or wrong. Now we see such things as ignorant mental inferences that disturb the expression of living truth. Hence, we do not use them to function any more. We can draw our wisdom directly through direct awareness.

The Purpose of Our Life

There is a spiritual presence that stands behind the activity of our mind. It oversees our actions and understands us deeply. It also oversees the actions of people and the happenings in the world.

Although the nature of this spiritual presence is a mystery for us, we can learn to relate with it and bring it forward in our life. That is the spiritual purpose of our life.

Thus, the true purpose of our life is not concerned with improving our living standards or increasing our power in society. Such things can only have a passing value. It is concerned with the kind of person we are becoming and the extent to which we are able to involve the spiritual presence in our life.

Here we call the ‘spiritual presence’ a higher-level consciousness. We contrast it with our ordinary (mental) consciousness and show what happens when the higher consciousness begins to awaken in our inner life.

We also address the issue of finding our purpose in life and the conditions under which we have to do it.

The two levels of our consciousness

There is mortal part of us, the mental-self, which is running our outer life today. It is selfish and self-centered, and we all know it. However, there is also an immortal part of us, a soul, which gives us our sense of conscience and the feeling of unity. These two parts are like two beings within us. Both of them are represented in our mind, but individually they function at two separate levels of consciousness.

We can understand the two levels of our consciousness by COMPARING our life to the life of a tree: A tree has a trunk and leaves. The leaves come and go according to the seasons, but the trunk sustains for longer. Further, the consciousness in the leaf is essentially the same as the consciousness in the trunk. However, when the consciousness is confined to a part, the powers of consciousness are contracted. Then the consciousness in the part experiences itself as an individual with interests that are separate from the whole. Thus, the leaf experiences the burning in summer, the chill in winter, and the fear of extinction in the fall season; but the trunk does not experience this fear. It grows over the years.

In the same way, our perception and insight into life depend on how we regard and consider ourselves. If we consider ourselves to be just a body with a mind, we experience ourselves as separate individuals with selfish interests. The consciousness in us gets confined to our mind and body. And we live mainly to satisfy the desires in our mind and body. Thus we think in terms of comforts, sensual thrills, money and prestige.

However, when we consider our identity as a soul, the in-dweller, we regard our mind and body as our possessions, like our car or house. Then our consciousness expands, and we can experience spiritual qualities and the higher values of life; we regard the forms of life and the conditions we are passing through as something temporary, like the leaves that come and go.

Further, the focus of our life shifts from outer growth to inner growth. Just as the trunk of a tree grows as it passes through the seasons, our inner life also matures as we assimilate our varied experiences from our existence on earth. Thus, the experiences of our mortal life mature the seeds of our immortal life. What we develop within us, stays with us; and we experience it as the STATE of our consciousness.

The Process of Spiritual Growth

Both the ordinary and the higher level consciousness are always reflected in our mind. However, initially we function mainly at the ordinary level. That is, we serve the mental-self, and in turn it keeps us preoccupied with physical activity and egoistic pursuits.

Our soul also has its influence in our mind. However, we give it so little attention that it seems to be something vague, hesitant and far removed. The result is that we do not experience the ‘unity principle’; our ‘truth sense’ is weak; and we cannot perceive any ‘deeper purpose’ to our life.


To grow spiritually, we REVERSE this situation. We can do that by simply changing our ‘point of view’. Instead of looking upon everything from the ordinary level, and giving an ordinary meaning to higher things, we have to begin to look upon everything from the higher level, and try to give a spiritual significance to higher things. When we can do that sufficiently, it will change the ‘level’ of our perceptions. It will change ‘from where’ we see and ‘from what depth’ we see.

Gradually we can see everything as a part of a much LARGER PICTURE: Then we can situate everything correctly; we can put each thing into its proper place; we can look at the significance of what is happening; and we can also know the motives that are involved. As a result we are not easily deceived by outer appearances.

The Spiritual Purpose of our life

When we function mainly with the ordinary consciousness, we only hear the voice of our mental-self. It says: “Play it safe and do as others are doing. Don’t try to be insightful or take unnecessary risks — you may have to face unnecessary difficulties, rejection or failure.” But when we follow the ordinary consciousness we live as a pretender or worse, as a commuter — someone who has to get up every morning with the crowd and do the job just to earn enough money to pay the bills. We may live comfortably, be able to pay our bills on time, and do everything by the book. But after doing all this we still feel that such a life is not really worth living. We cannot feel enthusiastic about living in this way.

On the other hand, when we can mirror the higher consciousness in our mind we can sense the deeper purpose to our life. We feel happy to know that there is more to our life than being a commuter. We feel that there is a deeper purpose for which we have come to earth. Hence, we want to find it and serve it. And unless we do this we cannot be at peace with ourselves or feel fulfilled. So, we ask: “What is the deeper purpose of my life? What is my mission? What is the work I have come to do?”

Most people think of finding life’s work in terms of career choices. However, it is more like involving the higher consciousness in the work we do. The task is to make our mind receptive to the higher consciousness and allow it to guide our actions and reorganize our inner-life. This task is complex and each one of us has to find our own answers, not intellectually, but by actually living our life. We do it in two parts. First we look for answers to our ‘proximate issues’. And after we have done that we can ask questions relating to life issues.

When people begin their spiritual practice they often ask: “What happens if my practice is not successful?” Evidently they are looking for some tangible result –like mental or psychic power. However, if our task is to simply serve the higher consciousness, then the issue of achieving some tangible result becomes a non-issue. The effort itself becomes sacred; and the work itself becomes a privilege. Failure or success is only a mental judgement that we make against some expectation. In the true sense our failure is not pursuing what we have come here on earth to do!

The Coming of the New Era

ShivNeonIn the book ‘The Crisis of Modern Humanity’ we explained the concept of Cosmic Cycle and showed the significance of our times by describing the ‘Signs of Our Times’. In particular, we showed the modern trend is to generate a false spirituality by making it rational or psychological. This trend is expected to continue until a ‘critical point’ is reached, when a radical change in orientation can be expected. This change would transform the conditions and purposes with which people live on earth. Something similar has also been declared by many visionaries over the past century. We return to this discussion because the critical point is near. Our purpose is not to scare our readers, but to prepare them for a smooth transition into the new era. We expect that ‘fear based systems’ of our times will be replaced in the next era by systems based on a higher-level consciousness.

To be able to participate in the making of the new era, we have to first cultivate spiritual qualities in our nature. We cannot allow fear, selfishness, greed or falsehood to motivate us. The extent of our difficulties will depend on the traits we have developed so far and how enthusiastic we are in making the necessary changes. The difficulties we may have to experience will not be caused by the new era; they will arise due to our attachment to the modern life-style, which is a product of the ordinary-level consciousness.

Today all kinds of practices have sprung up under the banner of ‘New Age Practices’. To name a few, you have past-life regression therapy, psychoanalysis, tantric worship, scientology, pyramid therapy, ceremonial magic and elaborate ritual practices. Many shops have arisen to sell ‘New Age Products’ and numerous ‘New Age Gurus’ have come in to market their ‘brand’ of spirituality. The symbols and techniques that were used to prepare a person for spiritual living have been hijacked today. People now use them with the opposite intent – to pursue their egoistic and mundane goals. The title of ‘New Age’ has also become a brand for generating business opportunities!

Much of the ‘New Age Information’ is propagated through the internet. It is cleverly adapted to promote commercial interests and gain cheap popularity. People sometimes ask: “Why true spirituality cannot become popular with the masses?” The answer is simple. Popularity requires a wide base; and the masses, particularly in our modern times, are most uncomprehending. Hence, if something has to be made popular, it has also to be brought down to the level of comprehension of the masses. On the other hand spirituality seeks to lift up the person, so that he or she can become adequate for higher knowledge. But lifting the level of our comprehension is something each one of us has to do for ourselves. It is not something that someone else can do for us. Hence, it is expected that true spirituality will remain unpopular with the masses.

People who live by selfishness, greed, sensuality, corruption and falsehood will certainly find it difficult to function in the new era. Their personal value system will collapse and they may find it difficult to adjust to the new higher-value system. Hence, they may fall out.

However, there are many persons who accept the terms of the new era. They want to participate in the change that is happening without getting disoriented. Here we address them here.

When the critical point is reached, each one of us has to make a DECISIVE CHOICE. Either we go along with the spirit of the New Era (by overcoming our preoccupation with our lower nature and our attachments to the ordinary life) or we continue to live according to the norms of the ordinary life. If we choose the former, we can catch the truth in life and get lifted. If we ignore this choice, we can fall out or face rejection.

How can I Participate?

Many spiritual seekers have asked this question in one way or another. What they really want to know is how they can actively participate in preparing for the new era. Here we indicate the way.

The ordinary-level consciousness dominates the modern world today. However, it may become dysfunctional in the new era. When a person works with the ordinary level consciousness without any higher influence, he or she becomes selfish and cunning. The ordinary consciousness dehumanizes the social life; mechanizes the work; and generates monstrous growths in society in the form of insanity, cruelty, corruption, and vulgar entertainment.

These monsters do not arise from the ordinary-level consciousness; they arise from the sub-human levels after the human being has been cut off from the higher-level influence. Without the spiritual influence of the higher consciousness a person can be easily swayed by sub-human influences that arise from the nether worlds.

Many strange and new things are arising in the modern world in the name of liberal and democratic values. They are not unexpected. They only show the decay in spirit, the decay in thought, and the decay in public life — at least from the spiritual or traditional point-of-view.

Each person has to reverse this trend within themselves. Then they can extend ‘their presence’ to the society they are involved with.

The KEY idea of Spirituality is that wisdom and the higher values of life arise naturally in the mind when we make it responsive to a higher or spiritual consciousness. Thus, wisdom is never the result of developing the ordinary consciousness, which is what is wrongly attempted through modern education! Wisdom is the result of disciplining the mind and making it responsive to the higher consciousness.

No amount of supervision or legislature can curb personal and social evils. It can only be brought about by involving the higher consciousness in the individual and in public life. We can do it by serving the higher consciousness; and it won’t happen when we remain indifferent to it.

The higher consciousness lifts our thinking, our values, and our inner worth. It will reorganize our nature, and make us responsive to higher things. Then we can use our presence to re-organised the social systems we are involved with. In this way we can participate in establishing the higher consciousness in humanity.

On Promoting a Spiritual Mission

The primary aim of any mission is to spread its message so that it can REACH the people who are capable of using it. The secondary aim is to provide a ‘support services’ to those who want to IMPLEMENT the message in their life.

However, for a mission to remain genuine, it has to also employ means that are in harmony with its aim. And that raises the question of motivation: “Should the mission be run like a ‘business for profit’ or as a non-profit (not non-profitable) service organisation?

What is the difference? When a business is focuses on generating profits, it attract profiteers and people who side-track the organisation onto selling. A non-profit service organisation, on the other hand, can focus on providing genuine value without indulging in seductive claims and deceptions just to improve their numbers. Such an organisation will lack the means (money) to carry out its mission, but it should not change its ways just to get more money.

What are the implications? You invite people who really want to ‘serve the cause’ and not encourage people who come in with the ulterior aim of using the opportunity to grow their personal business. The people have to be attracted with qualitative benefits and not with quantitative (financial) rewards. If they lack the motivation, it is better that they don’t join.


Who do you take your Advice from?

Should you take your advice from your friends, from family or from colleagues?
OR should you seek it from a professional – a coach, a guide or a mentor?
What is the DIFFERENCE?

Third eye-2The guidance you get from your friends, family or colleagues will not be the same as the guidance you can receive from a professional. The reason for this is that more often your friends, family and colleagues have a set idea about you. Hence, they are not likely to examine your issues or the situation fundamentally or in great detail. Instead, they will make some suggestions according to the image they carry of you in their mind. And that advice is unlikely to be what you really need.

Further, they usually don’t adjust their suggestions according to the feedback you provide them as you try to IMPLEMENT their advice. Instead, they may even judge your performance as good or bad against the advice they had given.

Discussing your affairs with a coach, guide or mentor will be a totally different experience. They want you to get things right. Hence, they will go into the details. They will examine your assumptions, your values, your beliefs and your actions so as to diagnose your problem; to know where exactly you are stuck; where the bottleneck point on your way is. Then they will suggest what you need to do right now to get your matters moving. Then further, as you continue to consult them, they keep a track on you. They will help you to navigate through your difficulties – making you more aware and more capable

Then why do people prefer to take their guidance from friends and family? The guidance from friends and family is usually convenient and free; whereas advice from a professional can be inconvenient and will cost some money. However, if you measure the cost in real terms, which is in terms of the value you actually receive, the professional advice will usually turn out to be much cheaper. Professional advice will clear the confusion in your mind; it will give you the direction that you need to overcome the difficulty that you are actually faced with. Further, professional advice is not always expensive. There are many benevolent professionals who consider the success of their client to be a part of their reward or success.
